Poker and the Beginning Trader

whos playing the poker room tourney today. my handle is manwittheaxe, i went pretty deep last week, within the 80 or so, i am looking to finish in the money today...
...as far as a career, dont get tricked into thinking its easy b/c youve busted up a few 1/2 or 2/4 tables, those games ARE easy to beat but your profit potential is very limited i.e. even on a great day your hard pressed to make $100, so unless you want to live on peanuts, the next option is higher stakes like 6/12 and that is where you start to find the real talent. ive been playing for years and know i can go to my local cars room and beat the 2/4 or 3/6 and i make some supplementary income from this, but when i goto the 6/12 and up i start to lose my edge and cant beat those games consistently. when you start to trade you are always at the big boys table keep in mind.
 
I am going to try it out today - just going now to check the minimum buy in - it can't be just $1, can it? i.e. I have to buy in with $20 and then the tourney costs $1?

Man, there is something wrong with the 'net today - I can't even get onto the website. Lots of email problems today too!

Can't get an email activation from them - can't even get to the site, really - takes minutes to load a page (DSL). Too bad, I was looking forward to this!! Must have something to do with the net today. Sent support an email but they must be swamped. Oh, well, if I don't see you this weekend, then next for sure, Ron.
 
Good post Ron. Right on the money. There did seem to be a problem with Pokerroom.com today. I got on again awhile ago and played for a little bit but the connection was so slow I quit. I think they must be having server problems.

I got my package in the mail today, works great, now if someone will tell me the best way to set it up so that I can learn to beat the Low Limit games on Paradise Poker... Man there are a lot of ways to use this thing, definitely not just your average casino card game program that you pick up at a Best Buy or something.

Where do I begin? In Lineup you can either select your own profiles or use one of the pre-packaged lineups, like LOWLIMIT.LUP or LOOSE.LUP. Under Game Setup you've also got a bunch of parameters to set depending on the type of game you are trying to emulate.

My suggestion is to devote 2 or 3 days just playing around and familiarizing yourself with the program's every nook and cranny. Also read the online help and manual which give good suggestions regarding testing and interpreting the results. After all that, I would be happy to answer any question you may have via PM.

Thanks Mr. Subliminal, I will probably take you up on the help, I started with lineup0.lup and was smoking it, just playing like most of the books tell you. Then I tried lowlim0.lup and I was the one who got smoked bad, even following the advice I got my but kicked. this is exactly what happens to me when I go to paradise and play the .50/1.00 LL Hold'em games, get but kicked, feels like it is all luck, must be a way to beat it. maybe you just have to play enough hands to get past the big swings in LL.

guess the "worm" hit our poker game, but i was able to get on last minute....tough outing though, 2nd best all day, i.e flop top two pair, idiot calls a cap with no over cards and a gut shot draw, but of course makes the straight...i flop set 5 on blind, moron calling with a 6/rag under the gun flops set 6...i make two pair or set on turn, somebody makes better on river, etc...
doesnt this sound like, damn specialist screwed me, i cant get filled, blah blah blah....poker has its frustrations akin to trading and is no promised land for frustrated traders... i did well on the low limit games so i shouldnt bitch
..btw, i am curious how that software works out for you guys, maybe i was always to proud to try it and it wont help with an important aspect of knowing your opponents and being flexible at times; but prob. perfect for someone learning and needs to understand just the cards

lol... I had to laugh when I read this... how true. I have had the same thoughts over the past few weeks, but I have been spending some time at i.e. the two+two message boards, just talking to other players, and I feel a lot better about my play. You have a lot more experience than I, so you will know what is to follow, but for any poker newbies reading this...

I am down 50 big bets after my first 18 hours of play, and I thought that I was doing something really badly wrong. I never thought I wasn't cut out for it, though - just have to observe some of the mind-bogglingly bad play at the tables. Some experienced players have told me that I could legitimately expect to go down $50 in ONE SESSION of .50/1.00 if the cards were really bad and I got good and burned by the fish a few times. They say that I should wait until 100 hours to evaluate my play and even then it's not much of a sample.

Another thing, re: starting stake - the experienced players I have talked to have told me that the fish inevitably come to the table with i.e. 40 big bets or less and leave when they lose it. Apparently experienced players will come to a session with up to 200 big bets available to them, even if all that money isn't on the table to start with. And in trading...? I have to believe the same theory applies. Having said that, I have not used this technique myself, and possibly this is why I have been losing - I tended to quit a session after going down 10-15 big bets, which usually takes a long time because I am playing so tight. It is completely possible that for xx number of my losing sessions, the cards were simply not great for the first couple of hours and had I stayed in, I would have seen some good cards and had some better chances to win. I don't think the experienced players need to worry about this too much because they have an expectation to win xx $ every hour, but the feedback I have been getting indicated that larger starting stakes are what the good players use. I invite comment on this matter of how much to bring to the table and how to plan your sessions - $$ stop loss? timed stops? Of course, if you're winning... :)

PS - Sklansky says it's all one long session.
 
I would definitely not go down $50 in a .50/1.00 game in one session. If I got down $15 or $20 I would stop at least for a few hours. You do not want to take big losses in low limit games and $50 in a .50/1.00 game is a big loss relatively speaking.

Same thing in a 3/6 game? i.e. would you stop after going down 15-20 big bets? I guess my question is - would the implied increasing stability of the game give you a reason to stay in longer in a higher limit game, perhaps thinking that unforeseeable and outrageous ongoing play is less likely to decimate your bankroll at a quick rate, giving you a chance to make back slowly? (I know that this assumption is just that - maybe 3/6 in a brick and mortar is looser than the .50/1.00 at Paradise poker - something I have heard at 2+2 - BTW, anyone wanting to play .50/1.00 at PP should understand that this is a possibility at any particular PP .50/1.00 table - it should affect the way you play, or so I am learning).
