Poker and the Beginning Trader

I'm not from Chicago but I believe that Harrah's East Chicago has a poker room. I know it's not actually in Chicago but I understand it's not very far.

thanks... checked their website, have stud, hold-em, hi/lo, and pot limit Omaha on tuesdays ; only 30 mile drive.

:D

Another interesting area of hold'em is tournament play. An entry fee is paid and 1st -whatever place gets money.

How it relates to trading, I think, is that there is a time factor involved. As the tournamnet progresses the table stakes increase. There are various strategies on how to play each of these time frames, just as in trading.

Play the open hard or bide your time? When the table stakes change--it is almost like a new open each time and there tends to be a flurry of activity. etc.

I don't have much experience in tournament play, but this thread has sparked an interest.

We've been using the "poker game" analogy for years, as it applies to trading. One of our traders, Chris Ferguson, actually won the "World Series of Poker" in 2001 ($1.5 Million ). He is not a "gambler" ( a PhD in Software), and his father is a Professor of Gaming Theory at UCLA.

The similarities are many...and you must realize that you only play poker when you have a true reason to do so. Gamblers simply "hope' to win, good traders and good poker players "expect" to win.

Good Post!!

easyrider;

You pick your own table. There are statistics shown for each table, such as, %players/flop, avg pot size and hands/hr. so, you can base your decisions on that. Also, you can keep notes on individual players and base table seating on that as well.

As far as the ability to cheat by teaming up with somebody, I suppose that it would be hard to stop(or maybe they know how to stop it). As far as the house cheating(they are based in Costa Rica!), take a look at the number of people playing and IMHO, the money they can make off the rake would motivate them to run a clean ship and have it grow.

I am making steady money playing the $.50/$1.00 thru $2.00/$4.00 tables. I'm no expert on the subject, but I'm pretty confidant that I'm not being cheated. I also noticed, that the players get really tough from $3/$6 on up. So, I just cap it @ the $2/$4 tables.

Kempo,

Have you experienced any difficulties withdrawing winnings from the site?

I'm getting ready to start with real cash. I looked at Planetpoker.com, but there weren't enough players there. I like Paradise Poker quite a bit. What's your handle at Paradise? I'm Bankedout, the same as here.

My plan is to start at the $.50/$1.00 tables and move up from there, that is if I can grow my account enough to be well capitalized for the next monetary level.

Thanks in advance,

Banker
