I have been playing poker online now for over 6 months. I have been playing Texas Holdem no limit for 5 years now on and off against real people. Here is what I have found as far as online play goes....
At first I started to play on the low limit tables 1/2 2/4 turned out to be a complete waste of time. I knew the game well enough but the river bettors all over the place get very annoying.
I went up to 5/10 and now play on that size table only. Also I started out with no limit but only play Limit now. I have been able consistenly everytime over a 5 hour period to start with 250 dollars and turn it in to 350-500 without fail in any session.
I play tight I play only with good hole cards and I know how to cut my losses fast and drop a hand when I know I am going against someone with a made hand. I remember the river bettors and those who play with bad hole cards and I know how to really crush them when I have the good hole cards down.
I also play the 20 dollar Limit Texas Hold em tournaments. I have played 20 of them in the last 30 days. I have come in 1st on 9 of them. 2nd place on 4 of them. 3rd place on 2 of them.
The rest I finsihed out of the money.
The game requires major patience to the point it should be a mechanical boring procedure. Waiting for good hole cards and knowing how to bet properly will crush many suckers on the online poker sites.
I will continue to play at these levels for another few months and then graduate to the 10/20 talbes later on. A friend of mine from England has been playing poker now for over 8 years as his sole source of income. He is 34 years old. Single no kids. I trade for a living so to me poker is now used to kill the downtime during the trading day or after hours when the market closes. My friend taught me alot about Hold em and what cards to stay in with and how to read players put that together with many years of Hold em play and its has really clicked together.
For example: I only play hole cards in a limit non tournment game that are j/10 or better. Suited connectors such as 8/9 I will play as well if I am close to the button. I will fold an a/6 unsuited as fast as the wind if I am far from the button. I will limp in with and a/6 unsuited if I am the small blind and next to the button or the button. Thats how you have to learn how to play. Position and cards and betting. Learning how to check raise is important as well. Also if you have decent hole cards but you find yourself in a situation where 5 players stay in all reraising each other I drop immediately unless I have really powerful hole cards. You want enough players in to make money but you cant win when too many players feel that good about their cards either. You have to also know how to calculate pot odds as they call them. I could gon on and on but you can find out for yourself with time online if you want to. Good luck.
