Please Help Me Build 12 Monitor System

Quote from WinstonTJ:

I stopped at 6 and built another standalone machine with 4x monitors just because it got to be such a pain in the ass moving the mouse from one end to the other.

I think the idea of having multiple monitors is that they would provide all the information you need to look at during the trading session. User interaction (mouse, keyboard) is mimimal. Indeed it is hard to draw trendlines on all charts spreading over 12 monitors.

To help: 1) use a big trackball. 2) set the mouse speed in Windows to maximum. 3) Lay the grid in something like 2x3 instead of 1x6.

spend the bucks and get a proper box.

digital tigers in atlanta comes to mind.
google em.

It would take me two hours to download the manuals for the gpu and the mobo and read them, ask both manufacturers if it will work with all three x16's, etc.

There's this guy Scat on here who can smell what will and won't work. Let's wait for him to bop along...

Scat?

I understand. I was thinking that you probably have Asus WS Rebolution that has 4 PCIe x16 slots & you might be using them for multi monitor system or someone on this forum might be using 12 monitors & 4 PCIe x16 slots who can answer & warn of any cons that I should be prepared for.

By Scat you mean Scataphagos ? If yes, then he usually has been on top of it on all my previous posts & my sincere thanks to him.

Actually need a bit more information to say specifically how they will work, but the bottom line is that he can run 4 video cards in those slots and each will run at x8 or x16 speed... which is waaaaaayyyy overkill for a trading rig.

Any idea what is minimum requirement from a PCIe x16 slot to run 4 monitors each having one chart with the most complex studies on each chart ? I mean would you say if each of 3 PCIe x16 slot ran at x4 speed be good enough for trading purpose ?

OR

Is there a way that you can tell that your chart studies are not updating in real time if you were running 3 cards at x4 on 3 PCIe x16 slots ? Price could be but studies might not.

Why not just run two or three computers? Minimize conflicts, add redundancy.

You have to pay for 3 software lisencies. You are allowed to run software only on one computer.

I would suggest you think which of those 12 screens have windows you only look at rather than interact with - other than typing in a symbol for change chart, and put those on a separate box, with another main box for those programs you constantly interact with - going from one end of 12 monitors to the other with a mouse is a long stretch.

Have you determined what processor you want to use? The board I have is only for i7-930/950, socket LGA 1366. If you want to use the faster processors, such as i7-2600k or even i7-2700k, they use different sockets.

Hi Bolimomo, good to see you.

I am planning on using i7-2600K & that leaves out all LGA 1366 motherboards.

Some LGA 1366 like evga has 7 PCIe x16 slots which run 4 at x16 speeds.

Does anyone know why they can't do the same with LGA 1155 MOBOS ?

Why don't you buy something like a barebones Dell T5500 or better - T7500.

I looked into them & that was my first choice but they have only 2 PCIe x16 slots & I need 4.

Curious to know why you need 4x PCIx16 slots? What could you possibly be putting into the 4th x16 slot that doesn't also come in an x8 or x1 interface?

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am going to run 3 ATI cards each drives 4 monitors. I am keeping my option open for the 4th slot for any future expansion. Also I am not sure if I would be able run Videos on those 3 cards so I might need 4th card & slot for that.

What are you thinking for stands for this monster?

Initially I am going to build a mock up desk to see what configuration will suit my needs from different points of view. After that I will use your suggestions of Ergotron stands. Thanks & I really appreciate them.

The Solution for Mouse Movement :

Can anyone find out from following video if something like it is possible for individual traders such as assigning hot keys & using a device to palce mouse on any screen without travelling from one end to another ?

Look at Desktop Integration Video from following link. It shows how mouse can be moved to any monitor without dragging.
