Please donate to Haiti

I am going to be the first to post a donation receipt. I have also given to the Red Cross and the Clinton/Bush Relief Fund. Beyond UNICEF, Red Cross and Clinton/Bush I do not trust. Please post all of your donation receipts here. Lets see them and keep this thread on topic and alive.

Again, I am not asking for you to donate thousands of dollars. How about $25 to just one of the well known charities above? Please.

Lets say you are too lazy to go to the sites. At least send the text message to the Red Cross which will charge your cell phone bill $10. The price of a beer or two can help someone out who needs it. The Red Cross needs your support.

I see this thread has already received 280 views. If I have convinced at least one of you to donate, then its been worthwhile.

The Red Cross works on donations and without them it would not be able to function. I have never made periodic donations before, but I might just consider continuing my donations to them and UNICEF from this point forward.

If you could do me a favor and please encourage as many people you know to go to the Red Cross, UNICEF or Bush/Clinton website and donate. Send some of your buddies emails or text messages. Encourage at least one other person to make a donation and ask them to encourage others.

I am more liberal than most on this forum and have done social work for a living before. But what about the ppl. in New Orleans or other desperate, needy Americans?

I believe New Orleans has had more than enough relief from the flood. There is only so much that can be done to help a city in need when the state does not want to help it. The main enemy to New Orleans is the government corruption.

Since Katrina, I think a majority of americans wised up to the fact that the donation business is a reckless and often corrupt money maker for the most part. I don't believe the Red Cross is efficient by any means, but it does seem to be the most effective along with the Salvation Army. So that is where my Haiti money will go. I don't trust World Vision, too much corruption in the news.

Through my tax dollars, Obama will be contributing on my behalf. That's more than enough. The world hates US, they think we're a bunch of arrogant cowboys, but when they're in trouble, they DEMAND we give. It is our obligation to give.

I won't be giving from my own pocket. I'm unemployed ...

New Orleans is (or was) in a very bad state no doubt. There are also several domestic issues here that we need taken care of. However, whatever hurdles we are dealing with are nothing when compared to whats going on down in Haiti right now.

I am certain that a lot of people in Haiti would love the comfort of a homeless shelter here in the US. Its that bad down there where the Haitian people would not mind the worst fate's in the United States.

These donations will not rebuild Haiti or revitalize its economy, but it will make a horrible situation that much better. It might save or help prolong a few lives.

Like I said, the Red Cross and UNICEF need cash to keep operating and do what they do. You dont need to drink all that beer tonight. How about not drinking beer tonight and sending the money you would have spent to the Red Cross or UNICEF?

In Haiti crisis, a teachable moment for investors and givers

Haiti | Red Cross | return on capital employed

Well-known to businessmen everywhere, but totally under-appreciated by investors, is the concept of working capital, i.e. the day-to-day operating cash flow that makes a business run. Turns out the Red Cross has a big working capital problem when it comes to text message donations. From Carrick Mollenkamp (WSJ), Americans pledge millions, but cash flow takes weeks:

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, CNN, and users of Twitter Inc. have urged people to punch 90999 and then type in the word “HAITI” on their phones to send $10 to the American Red Cross. But the money won’t be routed from most U.S. wireless carriers to relief efforts until cellphone users pay their phone bills.

That could take 30 to 90 days, telecommunications officials estimate, well after the critical initial days in which humanitarian aid organizations are trying to deliver medical supplies, food and water to save injured earthquake victims and help others with their most immediate needs.

To run its operations, the Red Cross needs cash today. But text message donations don’t actually come through until users pay their cell phone bills and carriers pass through the funds.

Haiti has already been pledged over a billion dollars just by the governments of the world. The average haitian makes about $1.25 per day. This means that just from the money from different governments of the world, the average haitian is getting enough money for them to not work for 3 months. There are so many people in this world that need help. I mean, you can donate money to http://aim4asia.org/ and help rescue some children in cambodia that are being raped by old american men right now as we speak. The haitians had 80% unemployment so 80% of them are just as well off as they were before the earthquake. A billion dollars is more than enough to send them clean water and drill a few wells (it costs $3,600 to drill a well on average) So the money Haiti is getting is already enough to drill a couple of hundred thousand wells for clean water. If you want to donate, donate to help save child sex slaves in the link above as they are way worse off right now and I bet every single one of those children would trade places with any haitian in a second.

Nope. A billion dollars will not be enough. You have an entire area that has been leveled by an earthquake. The money will probably not be enough to rebuild all of the infrastructure.

I would also not trust governmental entities to do the job. I think a mix of private and public entitities will do it. Here is a list of groups that I vetted through the Better Business Bureau and the other websites that seem credible enough.

Like I said before, the Red Cross operates on donations. Just donate $10. Thats all I am asking.
