Placing the Blame as Students Are Buried in Debt

I have no sympathies for somone this stupid and lazy. When I was getting my undergrad at U. of chicago, I worked every summer at the cme (floor). In addition, my friend's dad also gave me a part-time job helping him raise assets for the fund. This was around 94-98, every summer I was able to bring home 25-35k. She's just a typical American, lazy as hell.

her summer job may just paid minimum wage. After paying for living expense, there is nothing left. Please don't be so judgmental just because you were lucky to have the contacts to get a well-paid job.

As everyone knows, many students take on too much debt and than struggle to repay-- especially true in a recession. But the Original Post concerns an absurd and highly unusual case, and that is why it made the news. Ignore it. It's an absurd outlier.

One other major point. Up until changes by the Obama administration, banks were protected by the taxpayer from losses on student loans -- they had no incentive to question the borrowers ability to repay, probably were not even permitted to. The situation now may not be better, but it is unlikely to be any worse. The taxpayer will still pick up the bill on defaults, however there is at least a chance that defaults will be fewer since loans will cost less with the banks cut eliminated.

There is value to society in education so perhaps, on balance, it is not such a bad investment for the taxpayer. I look at these nut cases as just part of the overhead cost of what is otherwise a worthwhile program. There will always be a few lunatics.

Perhaps loans should not be made to those perpetual students studying exotic subjects.

Just in the interest of truthiness, the only way the federal gov't backstops student loans is if they die.

Student loans in default can attach to real property, wage garnishment, federal tax refunds, any kind of federal assistance (social security and such), pensions, and there is no time limit on suing for recovery nor can a bk discharge them.

On average I think it's a noble expense; one of the few gov't programs I don't mind my tax dollars funding.

For every $1 we will spend in 2010 on student loan programs, we will spend $20 paying people not to work through unemployment benefits. just sayin'..

'ya have to understand about the public sector, they have their pensions to worry about... here's what she should do... get a job and some credit, run up credit cards like mad and use the money to pay off the student loans, meanwhile don't pay taxes for years and years... then go bk on everybody. The judge will take one look and say "shit, we need to get that tax money for my pension!!" He'll blow off the private sector lenders, schedule payments for the taxes and cut her loose to go have a new life!! Why doesn't everybody follow the maxpi way? By some measures [not all obviously] I'm not crazy!! I keep telling people that WIN stands for Work Is Nonprofit...

The US government will put you in jail for nonpayment of taxes for a significant period of time. See Richard Hatch - sentenced to five years for not reporting his million USD from survivor. See Wesley Snipes - sentenced to three years for nonpayment of taxes.

This woman's best recourse is to emigrate to a new country and renounce US citizenship after she acquires a new passport. Given her educational background and experience, she has a promising future ahead of her as an English teacher to non-native speakers of English.

To be fair, I would look 20 years older if I had to sit through getting degrees in religious and women's studies also.

just goes to show that when times are good people will hand over money to someone who talks like an idiot.

the average american worker with the exception of government workers works hard by world standards.
