If the Somali pirates are allowed to go on seizing ships with relative impunity then others will follow suit. Made many millions of $$$ recently at the cost of 6 lives. That sort of odds is very attractive to people with next to nothing to lose. If others follow suit and they will, world trade could easily grind to a halt.
