This is my first build and I was an extreme NOOB to computer hardware before I ran across this http://www.elitetrader.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=223072 TIKITRADER thread in January.
I went towww.reddit.com/r/buildapc to look at other builds and www.reddit.com/r/buildapcsales to find parts that were on sale after I knew what I wanted.
An awesome website for help with what you need and making sure all of it is compatible is www.pcpartpicker.com they allow you to put together a pc that fits what you need and then they direct you to websites with the best prices on the parts. Any questions I had I asked on www.TomsHardware.com or on the earlier site I mentioned www.reddit.com/r/buildapc Everyone I encountered here when asking stupid questions was very nice and eager to help.
I enjoyed doing this so much I may build my friend a new computer.

SO, total of $591 and it all had free shipping from Newegg, which is pretty amazing.
I watched this youtube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XFkykETgkoo and it was very helpful for me but I was a beginner. I got my last piece of hardware on a Thursday, looked over the parts Friday morning and assembled the entire computer on Friday, with my naivete it only took me 1 hour 30 minutes to build.
if you have any questions at all pm me, if I come up with more sites to help I will let you know. I recommend it for a few reasons: Way cheaper, in my case this was about a third of the cost of my old (only 2 years) HP computer, no bloatware, probably much faster, and you only get what you want.
The pics of TIKITRADER's build scared me a bit at first but it is much simpler than it looks.
