Pete Rose in Hall of Fame

Quote from Pabst:

Ah bro, as usual......nobody says it better than you!

Well the whole thing is utterly ridiculous. I mean the irony of the situation is just absurd, who the fuck ends up wit more hits than anyone in the game and gets the nick Charlie Hustle by betting against his team and throwing games?!? Meanwhile you got scrawny men like Barry Bonds who suddenly start to look like Jim Brown overnight hitting 70+ homers and they are celebrated and will no doubt make the hall?!? Everything about the situation is shitty to me, from the big brother way he got nabbed to the prententious dickheads like Opt who call the guy a 'scum-bag' for betting on a GAME! :( I bet on everything from sports, to backgammon, horses, chess, risk, shit if it can be played then it can be bet on and it only makes it that much sweeter imo...

Quote from TriPack:

Charlie Hustle surely does deserve to belong in the hall of fame. What he did after his career ended shouldn't do away with all his on the field accomplishments. The question for me is when.

It is interesting that multiple cases of drug abuse is forgivable yet gambling is not.

Now the real controversy is whether he deserves to come back as a coach or manager as he would like. I personally think there's too much risk as a manager.

You don't get it. Betting on the game you're playing - or in his case COACHING - is the same as insider trading. Even worse, because a player or coach can impact the outcome of the game itself if they choose to do so. No way he should ever gain the honors of the hall of fame. He cheated...then lied...and lied...and lied again. He has dishonored himself, and the game of baseball.

Quote from Specul8r:
When I pay my money to see sports I really couldn't care less what they do outside the game so long as it does not directly impact the integrity of the game, and I can't see how betting for your team to win would do so.
But of course that's EXACTLY why they don't want ANY betting.

It's too easy for it to impact the integrity of the game. And since there's no way to regulate or insure that a player only bets FOR his team - the only thing to do is enforce an immutable and total abolishion.

And remember, it's often been the "favorite" fighter who at the right time bets big on the opponent and then takes a dive. In baseball, the possibilities for shady behavior is even broader because most sports bets involve a point spread - there's can be incentives to shave points.

Rose bet on baseball in spite of the decades long ban - he knew what he was doing, he knew it was against a cardinal rule, but he didn't care. And as far as anyone knows he did his entire career.

That's enough reason ban him forever from the Hall.

In other words what you are saying is he got a 'Dick Sandwhich' when he should have gotten a spot in the HALL.....

:D

I agree with you except the last part.. What is in question when entering the HALL is not a persons integrity ( if that were the case most would not be inducted ) its his play on the field, period......

Don't believe I said it had anything to do with HIS integrity. The rule was put in place to try to prevent players betting on the game and thereby further besmurching the integrity of the GAME.

Rose's integrity isn't at issue. His flagrant disregard for a standing cardinal league rule (one might even call it the league's prime directive), knowing full well the penalties of getting caught, is what's at issue and what should bar him forever from the Hall.

After that, his performance is immaterial. Doesn't matter if he could crap gold bricks while he rounded third base - he knowingly gave up his chance for the Hall of Fame. He just didn't think he'd get caught.

There's no crying in baseball...and there's absolutely no betting either.

what exactly does the rule state....Does it state...If you get cought betting you are banned from baseball and the Hall of Fame... Many players have done far worse and let back in the game with.....the only reason they are dogging lil pete was his reluctance to admit he did wrong..that my friend shouldnt keep anyone from the Hall.....

if they banned pete they should throw Alomar in jail for aggravted battery with his saliva...:D

Agree with you that there are a lot of players that deserve to be banned from baseball for everything from drug use to battery. Unfortunately there isn't a league rule that you can't beat your wife. But there has been a standing and well known king of the hill rule that if you're in the league, you can't bet on baseball or you're "outta here". It bacame a cardinal sin after everyone went ballistic over the Black Sox and the league sought to reassure people of the game's integrity. Believe all major sports have similar rules.

Professional Wrestling, A.K.A. WWF, doesn't have a rule about betting on their sport, as the outcome is known in advance anyway.

Of course they have no "integrity of the game" to protect, so it ain't an issue.
