One would think "rich" people would be using more electricity than non-rich people. They might be doing things like constantly charging their fleets of Teslas, etc. And the electricity providers can choose who gets power based on smart meters.

The idea with the smart meters is that instead of causing total blackouts, they only turn off some things that are not essential. It is much less disruptive to have heating/cooling, hot water, etc., turned off for an hour or two, than having a total blackout for that period.

So why wouldn't electricity providers cut off those evil rich people using more electricity than non-rich people? The simple answer could be they use less electricity in the winter because they heat their homes with something other than electricity.

This is a problem of antiquated energy infrastructure AND Texas being on a self contained power grid. The issue is not downed power lines, it’s a power supply issue from frozen equipment such as valves to control natural gas flow.

If Texas was on a grid that connected to other states, it would not be in this situation. However, states probably would not allow Texas in their grids because it’s energy infrastructure is so poor. The ironic thing is that if Texas has been in a larger regional grid it would have been required to upgrade its infrastructure.

This is all due to really bad government. When you start electing people to wage a culture war instead of manage your government these are the types of disasters you then become vulnerable to.

Texas’ state leadership is rolling out talking points about the green new deal but the state government has been under one party control for 20 years. That’s nearly a generation. This a result of Republican leadership in Texas. Nothing else.

You get what you pay for. Texans, Floridians and a few other states pay nothing in income tax. As a result, they have to accept that government services aren't going to be up to the same level that they are in states where you have to pay.

As for what causes it, again I'm sure there are many reasons. Its funny that every time there is a crisis, people immediately become experts in the crisis topic. We are fortunate, right here on ET, to have experts in viruses, power infrastructure, geo-political conflicts, wars, quantum physics and everything else we could ever need.

My hat is off to you experts who go out of your way and slave day after day to tell us how things are.

Yeh, I dunno bout that.

Oregon is currently experiencing the largest power outage in its history and they are no stranger to high taxes. Not by a long shot.

Similarly, what is California known for other than fruits and nuts? Answer: High taxes and lack of electricity.

You don't always get what you think you are paying for in the high tax states either.

so once again, if you don't pay for something, you probably won't get it. If you pay for it, you'll probably get it.

If you don't pay for it, you can't complain. If you do, you can.

You can put your hat back on. You have a board of utilities or something to that equivalent in Florida and so does most states, including Texas. This is a government responsibility and the government obviously failed. A downed power line isn’t going to cause statewide power outages.
