The ugly portion of that reality is that buried in that chip will be a mechanism to control the implantee's neural system by the people at the top of the cultural hierarchy. A different war will be at hand.

I think of it as Google on steroids. I can completely choose to not use Google, but cool things like "OK Google, arm security system" remotely or "OK Google, cast to living room TV" would be unavailable. Similarly, I imagine such a chip to be voluntary, but a big productivity improvement. Will people collect and misuse the data? Yes. Is it really that detrimental to my daily life? Not yet. I think people, once they meet their basic needs, are generally good, or at least not evil. It's the sociopaths (i.e., those that never had love as children) that you need to worry about.
