Pentagon Using Software To Create Fake Online ID's

The Pentegon has begun to use software to influence online discussions. The software creates fake ID's on social networking sites and engages real persons in discussion in order to influence the discussion and opinions.

While the Pentagon says the software is not used against any U.S. based websites there is nothing to stop them from doing this. Could our government try to influence the discussions of it's citizens with regard to military and political discourse? Furthermore, might a political party acquire this or similar software to influence online discussions about political debate and perceived policy?

This is a very dangerous development and may already be in use against certain types of political thought online. How would you know if the person you are debating in the ET P&R forum is a real person or a computer program trying to influence your opinion?
