Call it what you will, when Joe Lunch-Bucket starts writing those checks he's going to know who is responsible for the government going in his pocket. When Joe's employer dumps him from the company coverage, Joe will know who's responsible for that as well. November 2014 gonna' be real ugly for dem's regardless of who wins in 2012. By then millions of average Joe's will have been screwed, and all those Joe's are going to know who bent them over.

He doesn't actually have to write a check though, right? If he doesn't have health insurance his tax refund is reduced... ?

if you recieve health care through your employer you dont really have "insurance".
