Minor point - it's unlikely Thomas Malthus made a prediction about anything 144 years after his death in 1834.
Having said that, what if Malthus (and others) were just early with their predictions about population growth?

Only his timing was wrong. Unless you believe that humans will multiply and increase in numbers forever (most likely you don't) you have to AGREE that there is going to be a time when population reaches its highest number and that will be peak human.
Water is probably going to be more valuable than oil in the future, because you can live without oil, but not water.
There are already huge water shortages in the Western USA. Just check the water level in Lake Mead.(Las Vegas)

Actually, Atlanta also has a decent water problem, it is growing faster than the aviable water resources let it....
For extra credit: The reason why oil shale/tar sand deposits are just a wet dream for peak oil deniers, because both require incredible amount of water, what is simply NOT aviable in the West...

Personally, my guess is that a decent epidemic or a war will put an end to limitless growth, but that is just me, the augur thinking out loud....
