lwlee, RAID1 guards against hard drive internal failure but there a lots of other failure modes and lots of other reasons to make backups. User error, by far the most common. Software failures. Theft. Fire. Electrical problems / surge / power supply. All reasons to do an occasional backup of your personal files. Preferably kept offsite.

Of course. But for most traders that don't want to think about tech unless they have to. RAID 1 is very easy. Add it and forget it.

I was thinking about adding one of these. One thing you can do is unplug it and store it remotely.

Very cool since it's hardware RAID and eSATA!

Serial connection? What were they thinking?

I completely missed that.

Not sure what you can't do with USB that you can with RS232.

My experience of leaving computer running 24/7 was for it to start shutting down on its own or go blue screen. When I openned it up the heatsink was caked in dust so the CPU was overheating.

I have shut my computer down every night for years. I have never had a hard drive fail or any other major problem. I have changed computers about every two years for upgrades.

Thanks for your interest about our products. The Windows utility come with MS2UT is an optional management program which lets you configure the RAID Level and have some basic management. However, if you are not using that utility, you can directly change the RAID setting from the front panel of MS2UT; actually it is easier and faster to configure MS2UT from the front panel. So if you do not have RS232 port in your computer, you are still able to work with MS2UT without any problems. Please feel free to contact us if you have any other questions.

nononsense, the thought of a computer fire has always scared me. I once investigated a halon system to put out fires, but was dissuaded when told that it can be poisonous if you are around for the fire. Not sure what is the truth.

gnome, I agree. Unfortunately, dropping >$500 on a drive I figured I'd better get the newest technology in order to get some longevity out of the thing. Since I am having so much trouble, I just bought a 300GB UATA from newegg.com for $100 just to be able to get some work done.

i haven't experienced a blue screen since windows XP came about. Also, the matter of overheating due to dust, that can happen 5 minutes after the PC is first switched on, it does not take long to heat up. Your PC has been overheating, perhaps, because there has been little internal maintenance on your behalf, can't really blame you as most retail users are told that opening the case will result in warranty being cancelled, BUT internal maintenance is just as important as external, if not more IMHO.
