Pays more to be on welfare than get a job.

TRUTH......someone who makes 10$ an hour will NOT pay any Fed or (most likely depending on the state) State Income tax. In addition they would qualify for up to $5000+ EIC and $1000 per child Refundable child tax credit. So that woman working for $10 an hour will get up to $7300 in Tax Refundable Credits and pay no Inc tax. She will of course have to pay for Child care which is uhmm about $10 bucks an hour. Gas or transportation costs to get to and from work.

“Therefore, a mother with two children in Connecticut would have to earn $21.33 per hour for her family to be better off than they would be on welfare. That’s more than the average entry-level salary for a teacher or secretary. In fact, it is more than 107 percent of Connecticut’s median salary."

This statement is based upon the preceeding false statement. There are NO refundable credits given to people who's only income is SSI, SSDI or other welfare aid. They are NOT given $21 an hour. They are given an amount that barely covers food, rent, clothing.
 
FREE and easily available contraception and abortion services would drastically reduce the number of babies mouths to feed....in the meantime WE as a society are responsible for feeding those mouths.

People who make $10 do pay taxes. Sure they get their federal taxes back, but they dont get SS/fica back. Someone who makes $10 per hour will pay about $2,500 to fica/ss over the course of a year. So lets do the math...$10 per hour = $20k per year + $7,300- $2,500= $24,800. Subtract childcare which is about $125 per week per child ($12,000 per year for 2 kids) and their income is really $12,800. So even with the big refund, the woman only has about $1k per month to pay rent/bills/diapers/ect.

Sure they are not given $21 per hour, when you subtract everything from a $10 per hour job and see what you have left over every month or have all your bills and food and rent everything paid for by the government and then get a few hundred dollars from TANF, it makes more financial sense to not have a job. Even if you made slight more at your job, some people might like taking a pay cut(getting welfare) and enjoying an extra 8 hours at home and watching their kids grow up(or playing on facebook all day)
 
I had seen a case in 2009 where a poor young 19 yr old illegal alien mexican girl who didn't know hardly any english, working in the warehouse had her first baby then quit because she could get more money from the system. (something to do with welfare and a new mother, I don't know exactly what). Because she was only paid close to minimum wage at the place. She was the hardest working person in her area of lowlife goof-offs of young white trash or 2nd generation hispanics Americans who were paid several dollars more, up to that point. Before that she was a free teenager with no kids looking forward to learning English, then she got knocked up by another illegal guy with no job.
 
THe main problem is not that she is off bette with welfare.

The main problem is that - assuming welfare pays "lowest amount you need to live a life as a human being" - she can not make that with a low income job.

Which translates into:

You can not keep yourself and 2 children in a human acceptable condition with a low wage job.

Now, the question is - is that ok?

Personally - I think yes. As in: 2 kids and an adult on a low income job - sorry, how much money you want to pay those people for work?
 
The Somalians in MN tell all their friends to come over here for the free money. They live like kings here compared to were they are from. Why the hell wouldn't they take advantage?

At the government offices, they are always there. Can barely speak a word of English but they know the exact forms to get and fill out because they are told by their friends/family.

I guess I don't blame them for wanting free money in America rather than no clean water, food, poverty, civil war, no gov't ect.

I'm a little confused by the math. SS tax rate on 20K gross will be 6.2% for the employee and medicare tax will be 1.45 % for the employee. I got a total of $1530 for these taxes. So assuming I didn't make an arithmetic error won't that be $18,470 before any federal income or state taxes. We all assume there will be enough credits that little or no net federal income or state income taxes would be paid. That's still not enough money to live of in most areas without being quite impoverished.
 
Peilth I actually agree that for most single women with 2 young children she is better off staying home with them and collecting welfare than working for $10 an hour, and the kids are usually better off...assuming she is not on drugs or supporting a druggie BF. The biggest problem IMO with welfare is that people become conditioned to low expectations for both themselves and their children and money like drugs is habit forming where eventually you begin to think society OWES you this support. It is a downward spiral and trying to get out of it becomes almost impossible. The children and grandchildren who are raised in this condition will more likely than not just repeat the process.
