it's hard to imagine the outcry by large corporations if the corporate tax was ever eliminated. The Tax code is their number one weapon to use against any competition.

eliminate the corporate tax and that would be a big step towards restoring free markets. (plus, it would eliminate about 70,000 pages of tax code.)

It would never pass, because then you would also have to recognize that corporations aren't people. Hard for a politician to bite that hand that bribes you.

Correction: to decrease competition for larger multi-national corporations at the expense of small businesses.
This would also explain why the small business optimism index remains below recent norms.

To promote entrepreneurs, USA must regulate the market capitalization/monopoly of all listed/multinational corporations to twice their quarterly revenue.
Fed has been regulating the cash reserve ratio of banks since 1913.

Your points are well taken nutmeg. When you write, "qualify for a tax refund, in spite of paying no tax" I know you mean "no income tax". But this gets interpreted over and over on ET as "poor people pay no tax" which is highly misleading. We all pay many taxes, even the poor, who can be especially hard hit by the indirect inflation tax! And I have noticed, particularly late in life, that poor folks, in general, make one bad decision after another and end up getting taken advantage of to an alarming extent. I suppose that is a major reason why they are poor. Bad decisions throughout their lives..

when a poor person goes to the store, they have to buy the smallest quantities of everything which is always the most expensive. When the rich guy goes to the store he always buys the "Family Pack" of everything which is always the cheapest.

Yes, and one could go on with endless other examples. Who frequents the pay-day lenders and pays those ridiculous interest rates? Who gets their furniture at the rent to own place and ends up paying way more than the furniture is worth only to have it seized later?
Who pays their water and light bill in arrears with Postal Money Orders?

There is quite a little industry based on "serving" the needs of the poor and profiting from them.

Yep, when you are poor, the odds are hugely stacked up against you to get out of poverty. When you are rich, the odds are hugely in your favor to move further up. Whether you like it or not, that's the way things are.

Exactly. None of the important issues are being discussed in this election:
1) Reduced size of government
2) tax reform
3) tort reform
4) health care reform

Thus, no change or improvement for America...i.e. it doesn't matter who gets elected.

Idea #1 - You should open a store that caters to the poor. Sell small quantities of everything but price it at same price/unit that the warehouse stores charge so that poor people get the same price advantage as the rich guy. Problem solved. Be sure to let us know how your business is doing.

that's life. in India they use to sell toothpaste by the dollop. in new york the labor unions won't allow walmart.

i don't know if it was mentioned in this thread that people who make less than a living wage often live in some kind of family unit with other wages earners which brings the unit above the poverty line.
additionally there is subsidized housing and health care + food stamps + earned income benefits from the US government.
