Paul Tudor Jones

Quote from bentedges:

Here is a link to an interesting interview with Tudor Jones back in 2000. Those who say he didn't trade off charts best think again...to wit:

Q: Let's play a word association game. I'll say a word and you say whatever comes to mind.

Q: Technical analysis

Paul Tudor Jones: Made well over half the money that I've made in my lifetime.

Q: Fundamental Analysis

Paul Tudor Jones: Made the rest.

Q: Are you better at one or the other?

Paul Tudor Jones: Probably technical analysis.

Q: Market efficiency

Paul Tudor Jones: No such thing.

This confirms that he "trades off of charts" ? HARDLY! Sounds more like charts are a PART of his analysis.

C'mon surf; that's purely semantics. What part about 'Technical Analysis - Made me well over half my money' do you not understand?

Quote from Landis82:

You have no idea what you are talking about.

Paul hired Peter Borish to do regression analysis and correlation coefficient stuff in order to see if there were any strong correlations in various inter-market relationships, ie. Crude vs the USD. Paul also had Peter do some work on cycles, as well.

Paul traded off of charts.
He looked at various commodities for pattern recognition and then sought to exploit the "analog". Peter helped provide some actual statistical data regarding those inter-market analogs.

And for those of us that are near 50 years old, we fondly remember a charting software called MarketView. It was the first big thing after the days of using the Quotetron. And yes, that is what Paul used on his big Monitor next to his desk in the video.

How do I know all of this?

Because I used to sit in his chair on the weekends doing my T/A as well as hang out on his couch in his office after I came up off the trading floor.

Just because you actually worked for and know PTJ doesn't mean you know how he trades.

I'll take Surf's word over yours. He has interviewed 100 traders over 8 years.....much more qualified than you.

Plus Surf has made 50 straight losing market calls.......he has to be right at some point......................right?

:)

I have to hand it to you . . .
You "got me" on the 50 straight losing market calls. :D

Listening to Surf talk about sucessful trading and what it takes is like listening to Jeffery Dahmer's parents on what it takes to raise raise a well balanced son.

In my 17 years of trading I have never come across someone who is so wrong/ has no clue about trading like Surf.

Were you working for PTJ back in 1993 ? I interviewed with them for an assistant trader position on their night desk. It was working for a girl who traded the Asian markets. She basically told me I was gonna fetch coffee and man the fax machine for a year, and take care of errands. At the time I was 24 and thought my shit didn't stink so I turned her down.......not the brightest of decisions looking back.

I was briefly in Tudor's office in ~1993. There were copies of Prechter's monthly EWI "black book" everywhere.

Yeah. Precter has quite the great record. Not! I heard Tudor subscibes to the surf report also!

I am not surprised. I guess this confirms Prechter's accuracy just like Tudor's TA claims confirms "trading from charts" as a method with positive expectancy.

good catch.
