Pattern recognition

Quote from John Paterson:

Is anyone here using pattern recognition techniques to trade real money? What is the best timeframe to apply such analysis?

Can anyone suggest a good book on this subject and software packages?

I just got a new job with a hedge fund (1.5 Billion USD under management) as a technical analyst and my first assignment is to explore this area and develop an automated trading system to test under real market conditions.

John

I just got a new job as a heart surgeon and my first assignment is to perform a triple bypass surgery. Can anyone suggest a good book on this subject and surgical instruments?

its odd that a billion dollar fund would hire someone who knows so little--- labor pool must be getting thin.

Or the hiring practices of these funds are completely outdated. You know there is real talent out there that is looking to break into the field yet instead they choose this guy.

Really, I gotta wonder, is John Patterson the thread starter so naive that he could not just punch in "pattern recognition" in a search engine and use his own brain to make decisions? Plenty of books & info out there, up to the person to decide what makes sense and what does not.

Nice Call !! (as long as you covered at 1:30 pm)

Syswizard, the "garley" entry was not hit so no trade had to touch 1528 for entry, on the push up at 10:45 CST

I would like to express my gratitude and thank those who tried to help me and share their experience with me with valuable information and links.

I am 24 years old, just completed ny MS thesis in Applied Math. I have been trading stocks for 2 years. I have studied technical analysis and worked for one of the professors at the University on a project to evaluate effectiveness of indicator divergence signals. My current job is entry level.

I know how to Google stuff but that cannot become a substitute for experience.

I must say I am not going to post any longer here since I am very disappointed by the treatment I received by the majority of posters.

I am really sorry to see people come down so hard on other people. God bless you all.

John, If you don't want to post that's fine but stick around there is a lot to learn from these threads. There are some people here with enormous knowledge about trading and system development, as well as, working with various platforms.

Read the second article in the list of online articles of this link. This guy talks about systems that find systems automatically. IMO this is the way to go:

Good luck

i think surf was a Soduku creator ina previous life - he knows so many angles...

Many experiences in other areas of life can bring good habits to trading. There are other disciplines that have provided excellent skill sets to trading - I know of one former librarian whose a full time and successful trader. John may do just fine.

Also reading about Trade-Ideas' automated trading capabilities here http://marketmovers.blogspot.com/2007/07/use-latest-trade-ideas-automated.html

I also caught JP's mention of divergence indicators and am throwing him a bone:

I use Patterns as primary way to trade.. I have about 10-15 of my favorite patterns and trade them every time they present to me. I trade Eminis (Intraday) and Equities (2-3 days) and few commodities... All using patterns only.
You can see my Intra-Day trading Calls (posted as a research blog...)

Intraday blog from Fri. July 27, 2007
http://www.surinotes.com/index.cfm?pDate=20070727&CSEL=1001

(See each trade, time-stamp on the top right side of the chart)

Also, I do EOD analysis (again I post as a research blog for myself)
using Automated and Visual pattern detection in TradeStation but I trade discretionary...
