Palestinian killed by Israeli fire in Gaza: medics

GAZA CITY (AFP) — A 55-year-old Palestinian was killed on Monday by Israeli fire in the Hamas-run Gaza Strip, medics and witnesses said.

Yussef Abu Daher was shot dead near the Al-Qarara village by Israeli soldiers who opened fire from a military position near the Kissufim crossing, witnesses said.

The Israeli army had no immediate comment on the report.

The death came amid a week-long lull in violence in and around Gaza Strip, controlled by the Islamist Hamas movement since June last year.

It brings to 358 the number of people killed since Israelis and Palestinians revived their peace talks at a US-conference in late November after a seven-year hiatus, according to an AFP count.

At least 6,321 people have been killed in violence between the two sides, the vast majority of them Palestinians, since the start of the second Palestinian uprising in September 2000, according to a separate AFP tally.

Two Palestinian patients die due to Israeli blockade of Gaza

Two Palestinian patients reportedly died in Gaza on Sunday after they had been delayed access outside of the coastal region, due to ongoing Israeli closure of the enclave.

Medics confirmed that Zainab Bashir, 55, of the Deir Elbalah town and Yousef Al-Madhoun, of Gaza city, died yesterday of chronic diseases, bringing to the death toll of patients whose access outside the Strip has been delayed because of the siege to 117

Lives of a big number of other patients have been threatened after their exit from Gaza for referral at outside hospitals, or because access to medications has been made difficult due to the Israeli measures against the Mediterranean Strip since June of last year.

Israeli army attacks two Palestinian Radio stations and kidnaps four civilians from Hebron

The Israeli army searched Palestinian homes in the southern West Bank city of Hebron and nearby villages, kidnapping four civilians and attacking two Palestinian radio stations in the city on Tuesday.

Troops searched homes in the old city of Hebron and the nearby villages of Beit Umer and Deir Samit, kidnapping three civilians. Local sources identified the three men as: Mohamed Nasser Al Deen, 52, Jameel Alqam, 62, and Imad Abu Maryia, 30.

Meanwhile another Israeli force attacked the offices of Al Huriya (freedom) and Siraj Radio stations located in Hebron city and closed them down. Witnesses said that troops searched and ransacked the two offices then took computers and broadcasting equipment.

Ahmad Sonokrot, a radio technician from Siraj Radio was kidnapped by the Israeli troops during the attack.

Both Siraj and Al Huriya radio stations operate under license from the Palestinian Authority.

Israeli settlers attack Palestinian homes in Hebron city, one Palestinian injured

Palestinian sources reported on Monday that Israeli settlers attacked a number of Palestinian homes in the old city in the southern West Bank city of Hebron on late Sunday night injuring one civilian.

Sources said that a number of right wing Israeli settlers threw stones, glass bottles, and trash at Palestinian homes located in Tal Rumeida in the old city in Al-Khalil (Hebron).

The settlers also chanted hateful slogans calling for killing Arabs in addition to beating up some of the men in those houses.

During the attack Arowa Abu Hikal, in her 20's, was lightly injured when a stone hit her in the head.

Palestinian man run over by Israeli settlers near Ramallah

Ramallah – Ma'an – A Palestinian man was moderately to seriously wounded when he was run over by an Israeli settler's car on the bypass road near the central West Bank village of Ni'lin, west of Ramallah.

Eyewitnesses named the victim as Jihad Sharawna, a man in his twenties. The settlers drove away without aiding the visibly wounded Sharawna, the witnesses said.

Arab-American University under siege

Jenin / PNN – For going on 18 hours now, Israeli forces have besieged the Arab – American University near Jenin City. Students are appealing for help.

Via telephone, Student Council Member, Murad Abu Rabb is asking that humanitarian and media institutions intervene to lift the siege. “The presence in such density on the campus and neighboring area is unprecedented. Helicopters are circling overhead and they are launching flare bombs.”

Israeli forces have arrested at least 30 students, while 10 others students and staff are still unable to leave the besieged student housing buildings. “We expect them to break down the doors at any moment.”

All roads in the area are closed, while hundreds of residents, students and staff re unable to move. Director of Public Relations for the University, Jamal Sana, said that the siege on his building began “abruptly at 3:00 am.”

Israeli forces “set up barriers and aircraft began flying low and soldiers were jumping out. Dozens of soldiers are in the neighboring mountains. All faculty, students and staff are forbidden to move. They have spread themselves throughout every corner of campus.”

A brother and sister were in the roads nearby and instead of passing home were held for hours under interrogation, reported their father Khalid Kamil.

In an adjacent village Israeli soldiers used dogs and explosives inside homes, forcing several families outside. They were also blowing up water wells, as reported by eyewitnesses.

Journalists were unable to get close, while one photographer was severely beaten. All were threatened with arrest and beatings if they did not leave, including from Reuters and Al Jazeera.

Israel's attorney general has eased firing regulation restrictions against Palestinians demonstrating at the separation barrier near Jerusalem, a justice ministry official said on Wednesday.

The decision allows border police snipers to fire at protesters damaging the controversial barrier that Israel is constructing in occupied east Jerusalem and across the West Bank, he said.

Under the new regulations, snipers may fire at the legs of adults tagged as "key instigators," according to the mass-selling Maariv daily. Firing on Israeli and foreign citizens remains banned.

Border police snipers armed with Ruger 22 rifles have already started applying the new regulations, and over the past month alone 13 Palestinians have been shot in the legs in the Jerusalem area, the report said.

The semi-automatic Ruger 22 is widely used for target shooting sports and for hunting, but Israel's security forces have been using the American-manufactured rifle for sharp shooting.

Israel says the massive barrier, made of electric fencing, barbed wire and concrete walls, is needed to stop potential attackers from infiltrating the country and Jewish settlements in the occupied West Bank.

Palestinians have denounced it as an "apartheid wall" aimed at grabbing their land and undermining the viability of their promised state.

In 2004, the International Court of Justice issued a non-binding ruling that parts of the 650-kilometre (410-mile) barrier criss-crossing the West Bank are illegal and should be torn down.

An elderly Palestinian woman dies due to Israeli siege on Gaza

Palestinian medical sources reported on Wednesday that an aged woman was pronounced dead after being prevented from leaving the Gaza Strip for medical care by the Israeli Armed forces.

Jazyiah Abu Hilal, 65, from Gaza city died on Tuesday night, from a chronic illness. For several months she was prevented by the army from leaving Gaza to obtain life saving treatment, doctors said.

The death of Abu Hilal, brings the number of Palestinians dead, because of being denied permission to leave Gaza for medical care to 118, according to medical sources in the Palestinian coastal region.

The Israeli army has placed Gaza under total siege since June 2007.

The Israeli army attacks a village near Hebron and kidnaps a school boy

Palestinian media sources reported that the Israeli army invaded the village of Beit Khiel located north west of the southern West Bank city of Hebron on Tuesday and kidnapped a schoolboy.

Witnesses stated that four army vehicles stormed the village on Tuesday midday, soldiers then provoked the local schoolboys leaving school by firing at them sound bombs and tear gas, the students responded by hurling stones at the invading forces.

Israeli soldiers then chased the school boys and kidnapped Wajdi Al Zuhur, 12 years old, and took him to an unknown detention camp.

The clashes continued for several hours and ended when troops left the village. Medical sources reported no injures among the children.
