PAIR INVESTMENT (not trade) explained and illustrated by recent example:

Be advised there is a distinction between Pair Trading and Pair Investing, the latter adding marvelous virtues to the already meritorious reasons for participating in Pairs.

Beside the obvious, that of shorter vs longer time frame, the participation in each addresses very different objectives in style.

Investing in Pairs requires management, but is in a world of convenience quite different than trading. Also, the minimal amount of oversight required in Pair Investing when comparing its returns to the minimal ones in order to not have to have oversight of a bank CD or 3 to 5 year Treasury, make a compelling case for Pair Investing.

An illustration of an Aug 1 consideration for a Pair Investment on the Charts of Note thread was designed to have the position on for 2 or 3 months that ended successfully as expected but in less than 2 months is shown here. It includes adding a second and third layer in obvious areas of the position's evolution that allowed for what would be very nice gains.

this is my first post here, actually I've read the topic quite some time ago when johnnysharp was writing and that got me to try the pairtradefinder software and to be impressed by the probability for success. I've made some cash with it but it expired and I've postponed using the pair trading method for a few months during the summer. I've made an excel pair monitor but I can't replicate the same success as with the software. I'll try to post examples of trades I take and it would be great if somebody who is seasoned in this type of trading gives some ideas on them. All positions are dollar neutral. Entry is at delta cross above/bellow 2 and some check with the percentage from ratio or RSI. Here is my first post.

DVN short @ 65.48
SM long @ 86.14

The pair ratio shows a strong downtrend. I'd prefer a weaker trend. Also be mindful of earnings (next week)

Thanks for your comment. How do you filter out trades that seem to be trending, I mean how do you decide that it's a strong trend and you won't trade the pair. I've attached a chart to show what I mean and how the ratio snaps back at the trend (maybe this is a tradable event). I'm also mindful of the earnings reports, and I'l close MOC before the earnings in order not to take chances. Do you have an observation of trading pairs in the earnings season. Many of them will produce interesting signals because of price weakness or strength because of these reports. Do you trade them?

How are you picking pairs? As I recall pairs are chosen based on cointegration.

Hi,

I've made my own backtest analyser with historical data from yahoo. It gets the data then I run the correlation check (don't know how to do co-integration yet) and then apply some filters to the % from mean. Does anyone know where I can get to research the ETFs that everyone seems to be switching to? I know etfdb.com and cefconnect.com, but they're not very well organized. Any know how for me? Thanks.
