I would much rather grow my own food or have the freedom to buy locally grown organic vegetables than depend on a corporation to feed me during a crisis. Monsanto and McDonalds are a plague in my opinion. This is one area that Russia has right. Around 80-90% of vegetables and potatoes consumed in Russia come from family dacha plots which are less than a acre of land. About half of the dairy and meats consumed also come from this land.

In a period of economic crisis I would rather have an acre of land than a McDonalds down the street any day.

I'd be careful at saying Russia has this "right". Speaking from experience, you have NO IDEA what is put on all of those fresh fruits and veggies you buy in the kiosks all over the place. There was a TV show (in Russian) about a market that was sourcing lots of it's vegetables from northern Ukraine (Chernobyl).

Lovely. Personally I'd eat a big mac over radioactive turnips. There are no safety guidelines at all in Russia.

Growing your own food and having the freedom to buy locally was my point. I'm sure you can find examples of food contamination anywhere in the world so your example is not particularly persuasive. If the shit really hits the fan do you think anyone will be working at that Mcdonalds at minimum wage serving you anyway? Probably not. I would much rather eat vegetables from a local garden than a corporate farm using genetically engineered seeds from Monsanto and chemicals from Dupont. All FDA approved... how's that for standards and safety?

The food we are eating today scares me. The quality is horrible, it won't last from grocery store trip to trip when stored properly..it isn't nourishing and is doing horrible things to us. I do not believe this situation will improve.

I grew up on a small farm that grew about 90% of our own food. We always ate well, the food was tasty, and rarely had any problems health other than an accident or snake bite. In contrast the food today is tasteless, it has weird effects on child development (large front teeth that is not heritage), is being improperly handled and stored. These problems with the food supply like Salmonella, etc were not part of our lives before, so why do we have them now?

About a year ago, I was hungry and stopped at a local BurgerKing to get a breakfast sandwich mid morning since I had missed breakfast. After eating the sandwich and drinking a cup of coffee I realized I was hungrier after eating than I was before. I have talked with other people and they have noticed the same thing with other fast food. Something is definitely wrong when this occurs. I have not gone back in a fast food restaurant after this experience. The local news has been checking restaurants for sanitation, etc and most are really substandard including high end restaurants.

In our home we are returning to growing some of our own food from heirloom seeds and are considering relocating to have a small farm again for our needs.

It's true that soil erosion has caused the vitamin and mineral content of crops to plummet.

If you want nutritious crops, we need to re-nourish the soil.

Corp-farming, the liberal use of growth stimulants and chemical fertilizers, and crop rotation all play a part in depleting the nutrient value in the food grown today in commercial farming operations.

To be fair, there is a counterbalance need to get high yields per acre to keep food prices affordable, and to also ensure the quantities we need.

I'm not debating or arguing that what you say is untrue. I'm just telling you that you shouldn't quote Russia as the bastion of organic foods, because it's certainly not. And it is unlikely you will find contamination in other places to match that of radioactive fallout.

The way things are playing out in the U.S., with the government treading on sacred and inherent rights like at no time in the past, I am not at all dismissive that push will come to shove soon, and there may be widespread civil unrest, even some form of rebellion.

This is especially possible if the economy gets much, much worse.

Even treading remotely near the ability of individuals to grow whatever food crops they want as they see fit would have been thought unimaginable just a decade ago.

I remember scouting out land during the development boom in Nevada and Arizona, looking for big tracts, driving hundreds of miles each day with a group of us from this area.

We kept seeing very Libertarian type protest signs everywhere, including some very large ones.

I'll never forget the one banner type sign near Bullhead City. It was a 'Don't Tread On Me' sign, with the coiled rattler logo. It must have been 16 feet high and 25 feet wide, planted no more than 50 feet from a truckstop/gas station.

At the time, I didn't know what that represented.
