Our State Legislature is Stupid

Our State Legislature is Stupid? How stupid do you ask? Stupid enough to throw the entire November election into flux. We may not be able to vote for local offices in November thanks to the actions of the state legislature.

First let's discuss how the normal redistricting process works in our state for the past 200 years. If the local county or city decides a redistricting is required due to population growth (normally after the census) or other factors then they appoint a independent commission to draw up voting districts for the next election. The districts are approved by the county election board before being sent to the state legislature to rubber-stamp in a bill. This process was in place for school district, county commissioner, and city/town council member district drawing.

After the 2010 election our state legislature took it upon themselves to pass bills to unilaterally alter local election districts without the consent of local officials nor any type of local request to do so. Of course the target of this was any county or city that had any type of entity where Democrats had a majority. This usually meant entities in suburban areas of North Carolina.

I don't need to say that our state legislature turned Republican in 2010 and proceeded to immediately gerrymander every election district in the state. We now have the most mocked and gerrymandered election map of any state in the nation. Our Congressional districts re-mapping was overturned recently which required a new Congressional primary election to be held on June 7th.

However let's get back to the local elections. One of the targets was the Wake County Board of Commissioners and the Wake County School Board. Both entities traditionally had a mix of moderate, common-sense Republicans and Democrats. Wake County is the home of Research Triangle Park and the state capital of Raleigh. The population is generally upper-middle class workers in RTP pharma and IT companies. These families support a strong public school system for their children.

However in recent Wake County School Board and County Commissioner elections the Republican party ran Tea Party candidates on the platform of closing all public schools. One was quoted as saying "All decent families should send their children to private Christian schools". Needless to say the Democrats (for the first time) landed up with all the seats on the Wake School Board and in the County Commissioner race.

What was the response of our state legislature? They unilaterally re-drew all the districts for the Wake school district and county commissioner races to gerrymander the lines to create a Republican board majority in the next local elections.

Of course this was taken to court. Let's see what the lead federal appeals judge has to say about this travesty -

"Rather than seeking proportional representation of the two main political parties, the evidence shows that the challenged plans under-populated Republican-leaning districts and over-populated Democratic-leaning districts in order to gerrymander Republican victories," Wynn wrote. "In other words, the challenged redistricting here subverts political fairness and proportional representation and sublimates partisan gamesmanship."

Let's see what the school board chairman has to say. He is a former high school principal. He was a registered Republican but now is the only independent on the school board.

School board Chairman Tom Benton said elections should be held under maps drawn after the 2010 census.

"We are all pleased and relieved that the districts as drawn have been ruled as unconstitutional. We urge our local delegation in the General Assembly to simply revert back to the original plan's districts and terms," Benton said in an email. "However, if they choose to seek a change, we would strongly encourage them to set a process that provides for local control of local elections and not the state General Assembly determining how Wake County elects its local Boards."

These districts drawn unilaterally by the state legislature for Wake County are just one of the obscene re-districting efforts to be turned over in federal court. Case by case every single re-districting by the Republican legislature has been ruled illegal. Normally by judges appointed by Republican presidents. Other cases involve Charlotte, Greensboro, Asheville and many other cities & counties in our state.

The state legislature should simply rollback all of the districts to the 2010 boundaries. The Republican legislature needs to stop its absurd overreach in forcefully redistricting local elections. Allow local communities to define their own election districts - a method that has worked for over 200 years.

Of course, all of this puts our November local elections in flux. The districts must be re-drawn once again, approved by the legislature, and reviewed by the courts. The primaries will need to be held again. There is barely time for the primaries much less the general election before November after the necessary changes are made to the districts.

Just goes to show you how extreme partisanship on either side is poisoning this country. When everything is presented in a binary "I'm right, you are wrong" you get the worst possible outcomes.

Your history is quite selective. The state has long had ridiculously gerrymandered congressional districts. They were acceptable to liberals however since the intent was to produce black representatives, which they did.

Democrats controlled the state government for decades. The local media never objected to their culture of cronyism. When voters finally had enough and installed Tea Party republicans, suddenly the media were in a constant uproar.

The Wake County school board in particular has been a disgrace for a long time. It forced through a horrendous busing scheme for racial balance that led to the rise of large private schools for the region's well off. It produced a crazy 12 months a year school term, but only for some schools, then implemented it in such a way that families had kids on two incompatible school year schedules.

Of course the incumbents, the teachers, liberal do-gooders, etc liked the former system. Parents didn't and let their state representatives know it.

This kind of squealing is the normal reaction of the corrupt establishment when their activities are exposed to the light of day and they finally are held accountable. They run to their last remaining allies, the liberal media and activist judges, to turn back the clock. Good luck with that.

I will agree that the Democrats in North Carolina have a long history of corruption. They were in control of the state for over 100 years until 2010. They were ejected from office when over 20 leading Democratic officials were indicted by the federal government for corruption including the former governor, secretary of agriculture, and legislative leaders. Most were locked up for lengthy prison sentences. The indictments were due to press coverage of their shady deals from the left-leaning Raleigh News & Observer.

Due to this that the Republicans took power in our state in 2010. Everyone had enough of the crooks and figured the Republicans would provide adult leadership. Unfortunately it has turned into a disaster. The Republicans did not focus on providing common-sense financial leadership to our state. Instead they focused on legislating every social aspect of our lives and severe overreach into local politics.

Of course, the Republicans have also turned out to be just as crooked as the Democrats in office with over a dozen of them being indicted by the Feds. The latest this week being state senator Fletcher Hartsell, R-Cabarrus.

I have widely covered the Democratic malfeasance in our state in previous posts. I was hoping that Republicans would step in and turn our state around. Unfortunately things even went further downhill. At this point even Republican voters in our state are saying enough is enough... we all want common-sense leadership in Raleigh.

I should also note that never have the congressional districts in N.C. been as gerrymandered as they are today. Never have they been so gerrymandered that a court decision struck them down and we had to do the primaries over again.

I have also covered the Wake County school board in detail in previous posts both here and in local media. The state legislature which was Democratically held at the time had nothing to do with the Wake County school board busing situation or the school year-round calendar situation. This was strictly local. At least when the Democrats controlled the state legislature they recognized the line between state and local politics. I agree the school board's absurd Democratic-led busing for diversity policy was obscene; it angered many parents including myself. The Democratic idiots who drove this policy were voted out of office by people from both sides of the aisle. (the Democrats lost that school board election which ousted them with 80% of the votes going against them in a Democratic-leaning county btw).

This led to a Republican majority on the school board for a period of time. They did some things well such as coming up with a neighborhood school based assignment plan allowing choices for traditional or year-round selection. Tony Tata was appointed superintendent for a period of time and the parents supported him. However the Republican majority landed up making many missteps leading back to a Democratic majority now (after the Republicans ran tea-party "close the schools" nuts in the elections). The only good thing I can say is that the Democrats will never again bring up "busing for diversity" because they will be voted out of office immediately (and they know it). Ignoring that busing for racial diversity was declared illegal in court.

I think the political situation in NC mimics that of the nation. For a long time, there was general consensus on most major issues. The main issue was who controlled the levers of power.

Now the state seems closely divided between the hard left and the Tea Party right. There is little middle ground, so a change in control results in drastic changes in policies. The defeated party screams bloody murder and accuses the winners of radicalism, etc.

It's hard to make progress in such an environment. Governing takes a back seat to score settling. There is no room for compromise because there is no common goal, except defeating the opponents.

Election fraud becomes a big problem because who wins is crucial. Political differences begin to be criminalized. Welcome to your third world banana republic government.

Hmm.

It appears that there is a much worse outbreak in the North Carolina State Legislative Building in downtown Raleigh.
