It's to prevent riskless arbitration actually. You are not allowed to do a combo where you cannot lose no matter what happens to the underlying. OP was probably trying to open a spread (most likely an iron butterfly cuz that combo has the highest possibility of resulting in a riskless arb price due to the prices sometimes not being updated quickly enough) or tp a spread for a price higher than the difference in strikes of all the options in his spread.
But on the other hand, the rule is also there to protect traders from paying too much for a combo either when trying to buy back a losing combo or opening a combo peddled by talented market makers (like Mr. @taowave
