Optimal resolution for wide LCD?

I have seen different brand of 22 or 24 inch wide LCDs offering different max resolution. Is higher resolution always better? Will font look too small for higher resolution?

Which will you get?
a. 22inch with 1680x1050
b. 22inch with 1920x1080

How about?
c. 24inch with 1680x1050
d. 24inch with 1920x1080

I don't agree with that. The important number I use for viewing pleasure is the dot pitch. It's a measure of how close or small the pixels are. The smaller the dot pitch the more crammed on the screen. I've found anything less than .200 very uncomfortable to use for extended periods and .250 to be about perfect for me. Any higher than that is just too big.

Go look at some screens and make note of how small the text is and the dot pitches and it will give you a good idea of what you like.
 
On my 24" WS I'm running 1680x1050 and it's perfect. The 1920x1200 is just a bit tinacious for moi and since the darn thing is so big anyways, there's still plenty of info on the screen even at that resolution.

More...

22" are mostly (all?) SXGA, 1680x1050.
24" are all UXGA, 1920x1200

24" cost a lot more because of the higher resolution and almost always a higher quality panel (a few makers are putting cheapo TN panels in 24" to reduce cost).

For best display, get the 24". You can increase font size for almost everything (except tool bars), if desired.
