The specific trading instrument has got relatively little to do with whether or not you will make it as a trader... ceteris paribus, the vast majority of people who attempt to trade will lose, irrespective of whether they are trading stocks, options, futures or other derivatives...
 
of course its possible to make huge gains on options, but the real moeny (not just from one trade here and there) comes from selling premium. besides position trading, i can usually clear about 6 - 9% per month just by selling out of the money spreads (not naked). its doable, but takes much more patience and strategy than buying the latest mover...
