Operating System?

there are viruses, but you just havent gotten one yet. but with unix user access system, it will not delete the whole system paritition if you are not logged on as root.

software doesn't work when upgrade processor, i think apple is telling you something.

Mac OS X is nearly bulletproof these days. You will find limited trading software, but no viruses, spyware or crashes.

If you can work with the available software, its the way to go IMO.

Virtual PC, the PC emulator is very usable on a fast dual G4 but does not yet work on the dual G5.

i have Xp 2000+ 1GB of ram, ECS(50bucks) MB, runs fine.

upgrade your memory, turn off virtual memory, if you can afford to do so.

Athalon +1800, 512MB RAM, ASUS mobo, Matrox digital video card. I'm no techie, but there seem to a few processes that stay running when they shouldn't - for example I have to drop the NTVDM process manually sometimes after I close TradeStation 4. XP has been tweaked in line with the suggestions on www.blackviper.com (conservative settings). The only things in the system tray are ZoneAlarm, AVG, SpamPal and Proxomitron. Software is essentially M$ Office Pro plus my trading apps, no monster games, etc, Virus and spyware scanned twice weekly.

I can live with it as it stands, but I would like to be able to forget about maintaining the machine and just get on with using it, hence the look at going to a Mac G5 or something and running an emulator for the trading software. Anyone tried this?

firewall blocks incoming connection.

software like zone alarm, norton internet security suite allows you the control other software from opening outgoing connections.

need 1GB + memory, TURN OFF GOD DAMN WINDOWS VIRTUAL MEMORY.

Quote from Banjo:

Get a decent nat/spi hardware firewall (router) even if you only run one machine and dump software firewalls (zone alarm). Bump mem up to 1gig. That should clean up a lot.

boot into your win2k operating system in SAFE MODE w/networking support
by pressing F8 to show boot menu

then backup your data to another computer by using the network connection.

reformat, reinstall. no other way to do it.

Help!
My PC is toast. I had the explorer problem detailed in other posts here wherein an "invalid syntax" shows up as the window title. After trying anything and everything, nothing seems to work but now it does'nt even open anymore, I just get a window that says invalid iexplore.exe... In addition, I get the windows installer opening up 1,2 even 3 instances of it as if it wants to install something. Sorta reminds me of that movie about a car called "Christine" by Stephen King..

When I re-installed win 2K it initially asks me for a "clean" or "repair".I tried repair, no success then clean.. Now when I boot up the PC, it presents me with 2 win 2K OS choices. If I pick the old win 2K -smae old problem. If I pick new OS, it hands at Windows starrtup screen. Any suggestions on how I can really start fresh so I only see the new clean install. Obviously, I'd rather not reformat the drive coz I still have data in it. Thanks
