Open The Economy... "Get Back To Normal"... ??

What we need to remember is that the lockdown did nothing to slow the spread of the virus------The American People made that happen by being careful. No lockdown was needed for that to happen. In any event, there are tons of people out shopping, working etc. and mitigating. I trust The American People-----I trust Trump.

The governors should have never shut down the economy. Sweden and South Dakota have it right and will have a nice head start on herd immunity.

Sweden that has many more deaths than its neighbors with a death rate of over 10% of the cases --- is a very poor example of a reasonable COVID-19 response. Sweden has 120 deaths per million vs. 94 per million in the U.S. All of its other COVID-19 stats look equally dismal. Among the worst in the world.

Trump, Cuomo battle over funding to states
https://thehill.com/homenews/administration/493342-trump-cuomo-batle-over-funding-to-states

President Trump and New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) on Friday sparred over additional federal assistance for states as they try to ramp up their respective COVID-19 testing in the hopes of restarting their economies.

The president took to Twitter during Cuomo's press briefing, in which the governor reiterated states' need for federal aid to increase coronavirus testing capacity.

"Governor Cuomo should spend more time 'doing' and less time 'complaining'. Get out there and get the job done," Trump tweeted.

Trump also referred to the field hospital that was constructed by the Army Corps of Engineers at the Javits Convention Center in Manhattan, saying: "We built you thousands of hospital beds that you didn’t need or use."

When made aware of Trump's tweet, Cuomo sought to fact-check the president, saying that 800 of the 2,500 available beds at Javits have been used. He then accused Trump of discounting 800 people and being "disrespectful."

Cuomo added that the initial projections that said anywhere from 100,000 to 240,000 Americans could die from the virus came from the White House's coronavirus task force.

"They were your projections, Mr. President," a perturbed Cuomo said.

Cuomo also said he had repeatedly thanked the president for the aid that he already sent to New York, such as the USNS Comfort and the field hospital at Javits.

"How many times do you want me to say thank you for doing your job?" Cuomo said.

Cuomo reiterated that without federal help, the states would not be able to test effectively. The governor has been one of the main voices saying that widespread testing is needed for the country's economy to reopen, something that Trump has been anxious to see happen.

"If we don't have federal help on testing, we have a real problem," the governor said.

Trump continued to tweet as Cuomo's briefing winded down, saying that states "need to step up their TESTING!" He also noted that Cuomo "ridiculously" asked for 40,000 ventilators and asserted that states should have had their own stockpile of machines.

Can we just start openly saying Birx is a failure yet?

Her job is to coordinate the national response and it’s obvious there is no coordinated effort. Her and Trump promised a website to streamline patients into testing sites, never happened. Last night she admitted the reliance on private labs to develop and process tests has been a waste and will not accommodate reopening the country. The national phases plan she rolled out was trash and states formed compacts to protect themselves against the federal reopening.

Okay, I see those points, but some of them are no longer of interest to me.

I am interested in seeing where people stand on the issue of re-opening the economy. I personally am a moderate. I support much of the near term full shutdown while testing and equipment status improves.

I do not support- after a couple more weeks of shutdown or so- keeping the economy shutdown as long as there are cases of coronavirus. Becoming Venezuela is not the way to health. And yes, there will be some deaths related to partially re-opening or gradually re-opening the economy and yes there will be deaths related to not doing it as well. Welcome to reality and the world of tough choices. 65% of the men who died in world war 1 died of the Spanish flu, but there will also risks to not having them there.

Some of the states have put forward reasonable plans to "open" that goes in stages. However the starting point to move forward is wide-scale testing and contact tracing. The U.S. currently does not have the necessary number of COVID-19 tests available to perform wide-scale testing and has done no formal contact tracing whatsoever. We can't even get across the line at this point to pass the entry criteria for re-opening the economy.

You fault Trump for not listening to the expertes and for allegedly always being on the verge of firing or dismissing them.

Then when he works with them and they jointly develop a plan that clearly shows their input and influence, you trash the shiite out of them.

Its all about the election for you and your ilk.

Yeh, I am somewhat okay with those statements. I support some aggressive, unpretty shutdown stuff upfront as long as there is a rational basis for it. We are truly gaining on testing and equipment however raggedy that process is and those are tools to support gradual re-opening.

But this happy horseshit supported by Rahm Emmanual's brother for example, and a couple people here about not opening the economy for the next 12-18 months in any degree is a non-starter for me.

Sweden also is no example I am interested in because I support high levels of mitigation. So I am done with looking at them, but I am done with looking at countries that are on total shutdown too. I will be focused now on the few european and other countries doing partial openings to see what the learnings are there for us.

Love it when I see the simplistic static view of folks discussing Sweden and how bad it is. What you are leaving out is the indirect "lockdown" deaths and malaise in countries with lockdowns. The toll taken on countries and states that were locked is massive and will continue far into the future. In the meantime, Sweden has built up more herd immunity and continues on with their toes tapping.

By the way, Italy had a lot more deaths per million than Sweden and also has the "lockdown" malaise and death, so they have a double whammy. Locking down Italy did absolutely nothing to slow the spread of the virus. Sweden, South Dakota et al are models of how this should have went. Without a vaccine, there has to be some badness---

Mitigation can be done without a lockdown. The American People have shown that. Lockdowns are unconstitutional anyway. Governors do not have the authority to tell people that they cannot come out and assemble. No one will probably call them on it, but it's a fact.
