Only in America: Solar Projects Cancelled

There is wholesale environmentalist movement underway in the U.S. against large scale solar farms. The left-wing environmentalist view these solar farms created by firms that usually have a relationship (funding, ownership, etc.) from U.S. electric utility companies as not being beneficial. The claim is that these solar farms allow the U.S. utilities to provide an "illusion" that they are green -- while actually undermining the intent of "green" power -- while also involving a bunch of financial shenanigans to allow power companies to bypass regulatory requirements including rate requirements. (i.e. the regulated electric companies are allowed to charge more for green power in some states which they are effectively buying from a unregulated company which they partially own -- hence providing themselves with a self-servicing benefit.)

The other complaint is that the construction of these large solar farms cause run-off, destruction of woods, and disruption of farmland in their construction -- and hence should be opposed from a zoning perspective. The efforts against solar farms in North Carolina are funded from national environmental left-wing group(s) -- they find and use local activists/residents to oppose the proposed new solar farms in zoning hearings, etc. These are "astro-turf" campaigns and are not really locally funded & based.

The environmental activists want only roof-top solar panels are existing residential and commercial buildings with net-metering payments, etc. Utilities oppose these proposals since they would require a re-build of the grid if adopted on a large scale with many discrete "power sources" spread over a large geographic area. Large solar arrays at a single location are much easier to fit into the the existing grid.
You want to go against the generally accepted discourse? You need to give sources. Right now I don't believe a word you say.
I'm aware of the NIMBY attitude of some environmental activists or the more extreme version of environmental activism who battle for the end of consumerism but I've never heard of environmental activists fighting against solar farms.

As I noted left-wing environmental groups for nearly a decade have opposed solar and other green energy projects across the U.S. -- this trend has accelerated over the past three years. Primarily these environmental groups oppose these projects because they conflict with the group's vision of land-use. There are numerous news stories outlining the opposition to solar and green power from well known left-wing environmental activist groups such as the Sierra Club, Audubon Society, the Sunrise Movement, and the Natural Resources Defense Council.

As outlined in the news stories below, well-known national environmental organizations have funded & driven local campaigns in recent years to oppose solar and wind power. Effectively these campaigns are a form of "astro-turfing" where national organizations recruit local residents to drive their environmental concerns to oppose zoning etc.

The talking points trying to tie opposition to solar energy simply to conservatives and NIMBYism simply does not hold water -- especially when the majority of the well-funded opposition is coming from left-wing environmental groups.

Let's explore some headlines from across the U.S. in recent years....

America’s Top Environmental Groups Have Lost the Plot on Climate Change

America’s biggest green groups are over and over again lining up on the wrong side of decarbonization. The Audubon Society is suing to block California wind farms. The Natural Resources Defense Council supported closing nuclear power plants in New York and California.. The Sunrise Movement is supporting a moratorium on large solar projects in Amherst, MA. And the Sierra Club has organized opposition to solar projects in Florida, California, Maryland and elsewhere.

In Nevada, the Sierra Club and groups like it were the primary challenger to a 14-square-mile solar project. The reason? Affection for the plot of land, which also shelters endangered tortoises.

with all things GWB, this is the best approach.

I followed the link on a few of your examples and find that some have fair reasons to push back on energy company schemes to grab land or cash in on government rebates. But I will also admit that you're also right to point to some nonsense.
I worked in the shipping industry and remember this environmental ngo would send their dinghy to "inspect" ships at port for any infractions of any laws on the book, then basically extort fees from shippers to keep their findings private. No different from thugs getting protection money from mom and pop stores.
I spent over 10 years working for the evil industry fleeced by government, unions and other special interest groups because all know that transportation cost is a micro expense line of doing business and our large distribution conglomerates are willing to pay whatever it takes to get products on shelves. Yet, I was quite aware that my industry cut corners every which way to squeeze profit margins.
At the end of the day, we wrap up our work in value add when we truly are just self interested.

I have had an up close view of a solar farm battle in southeast Durham where I live in N.C. There is an existing solar farm and they have proposed purchasing the neighboring land and doubling the solar farm in size.

This solar farm is not an eyesore. In fact it is hard to see from the road. It is surrounded by a chain link fence with barbed wire at the top but evergreen trees are planted around the entire perimeter which makes it hard to even see the solar farm.

However soon as the expansion was proposed these left-wing national environmentalist groups such as Sierra, etc. stepped up to fund local activists to oppose the re-zoning of the land. They have now held the project off for several years.

I will note that all the people supporting the solar farm including neighboring landowners, the solar farm company owner, associated Duke Power representatives/executives, and developers/builders of nearby sub-divisions can only be described as right-wing conservatives. All of them support the solar farm project; they are in it for the money

This entire experience has been eye opening to me in terms of who is resisting green solar and wind power in the U.S. -- it is not the right but the left in project after project nationwide. To be fair the environmental groups have some points -- especially regarding the need to re-build our national electric infrastructure to support rooftop solar at many discrete sites and that some of these large projects are financially self-serving for the electric power companies.

Some of the issues with evolving the U.S. electric grid to support green power is described in this article.

Here’s why the U.S. electric grid isn’t running on 100% renewable energy yet
