Insurance for the Mangiones and their two boys,which they bought on the individual market, was going to almost triple in 2014 --- from $333 a month to $965.

The insurance carrier made it clear the increase was in order to be compliant with the new health care law.

"This isn't a Cadillac plan, this isn't even a silver plan," Mangione said, referring to higher levels of coverage under ObamaCare.

How come the health care monthly premium so high? Since it is tied to income, I can guess his income is extremely high.

Right?

Anybody can comment on this? I am really curious.

Actually any normal family with a middle-class income of 90K or so will not get any subsidies from the government. If you earn above $45,960 for an individual or $94,200 for a family of four then you get no Obamacare subsidy. The subsidies are pretty small for incomes approaching these limits.

All the insurance companies including BCBS in our state of North Carolina have greatly increased rates on Obamacare compliant plans for 2014. Every family above the subsidy threshold who has to purchase their own insurance is getting completely wacked with the increased rates.

Insurance companies appear to love Obamacare they have taken the opportunity to greatly increase the rates on all of their non-corporate policies while making the assumption that many lower income people will not feel the impact because they will get subsidies from the government - individuals and families above the subsidy limits in NC are getting hit with increases that range from 35% to 300% based on our local media.

Perhaps if Obamney care creates a true crisis in medical access, something constructive will be done as far as bringing costs in line with those of other developed nations -- which in my personal opinion will require breaking the strangle hold of the U.S. medical cartel. In that sense, perhaps Obamney care is a step in the both the wrong and right directions. We seem to be a nation of crises in the sense that we will keep doing the wrong thing until we are in such a mess that we are forced to change direction. On the other hand, if only U.S. Senators would be forced to purchase private health insurance policies from BCBS we might be surprised at how quickly rates come down. :D
