David Turpin’s parents, James and Betty Turpin of West Virginia, told ABC News that they were “surprised and shocked” by the allegations. They said their son and daughter-in-law, whom they have not seen for several years, are religious and kept having children because “God called on them.”

The grandparents said that the children are home-schooled, made to memorize long scriptures in the Bible. Some of the children, the grandparents told ABC News, have tried to memorize the entire book.
 
Not religious myself, but possibly the development and sharing of religious beliefs has greatly aided trade and communications between many separate peoples. But you'd have to go back to the Neolithic and Bronze ages in Europe and the Middle East for the benefits. Once organised religion arrived it has been all downhill.
 
At last The Pope has spoken out against nuclear wars.
He should have given contraception a positive mention too.

It has suited monarchs, dictators and politicians of all types to emphasise religious differences. Much easier than having to use persuasive reasoning. Much less risky than exercising autocratic power.

Looks like its still working.
