DHOHHI, That doesn't support what I see in over 10 years of buying insurance in the private market. But since neither of us are willing to divulge private details and provide proof, I suppose this debate isn't going anywhere. I read the insurance policies and the fine print. I know the difference between the "old plan" and the "new plan".

I've bought my own health insurance since 1996 ... 18 years. And through careful shopping my premium in the early 2000's was $150/month. And now, it was $364 for BOTH myself and my wife. That's a small increase over the years. Sure, we switched companies .. when BC/BS started raising by 15% or more we bailed and found identical coverage at 35% LESS.

Odumbocare policies have to be more expensive than prior coverage since they mandate that consumers buy coverage that can never be used (by many insured) as I cited in my prior post. Let's look at auto insurance ... what if someone had a 1986 clunker? Would it make sense for the individual to be forced to buy comprehensive and collision? No, it's wasteful. Same with mandated crap. I guess our experiences are different.

It looks like you're really just paying a very large sum for catastrophic insurance.

Have you considered going naked of insurance and not overpaying taxes so the irs can't dock you for a penalty? Then just pay out of pocket for routine med costs? If a catastrophe hits there are foreign junket type medical destinations that can take care of it for a fraction of the cost of US hospitals.

I know it's a risk if you are really concerned about a catastrophe, but it might be a risk worth taking for other people to consider even if you don't feel it's right for you and your family. Like a single person for instance.

I just turned 60, wife is 57. A catastrophic event, like cancer or a heart attack, could be a financial disaster with no insurance. And we don't mind paying $4200/year for premiums since once we'd hit the $10K deductible everything thereafter is 100% covered. I work out 6 days per week and eat healthy but one never knows if/when some medical event could surface. I have a sister who is every bit as active as I and at age 50 she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Whereas she and her husband were both professionals and in good shape financially paying all bills out of pocket would likely have been devastating. I have no problem having health insurance ... but we'd like to keep what we have as far as coverage.

Beside your point, DH's particular grievance, as has been pointed out before, is shared by a minority of Americans, the wealthy, self-employed in the individual market.

Uhhh Richter ... do you think that it's in part because 70% of Americans are overweight or obese? And that many of them have health issues that were brought on by their irresponsible behavior and lifestyles. Naturally they want coverage that someone else pays for. Only 30% of Americans are not in the above groups. And if you don't know it the main reason we like high deductible policies is because we take care of ourselves, both financially and as far as fitness goes. So we get penalized for that positive behavior? Odumbo is a disgrace to this nation.

I'm not wealthy but in good shape. But that's because I took responsibility for myself throughout my working life. As far as being self employed ... not really, been trading since 1996 as my sole source of income.

You think a slob who is 5'7" and weighs 320 who has high cholesterol, high blood pressure, maybe heart issues should pay the same premium as a 6'2", 175 fit person of the same age? Unfortunately, low quality food, typically packed with grain, is cheaper than high quality food. This is why the poor around the world, who expend more calories daily than we do, are becoming obese--it is the hormonal theory of fat accumulation. As for other lifestyle factors, like smoking, I agree, health insurance premiums should be adjusted for that.

For smoking, it already is adjusted upward under ACA. Smokers premiums are higher. AND, no part of that extra premium is subsidized by government. But you already knew that.
