off-site research setup?

Why not take the data with you on a laptop? Or are you downloading updates everyday?
I seem to go through laptops like they are made out of toilet paper (killed two of that in the span of a year) and it's likely to get even worse on the road. I am going to setup downloads for the updates, but that's not a crucial aspect.

All you need to do is set up a Google cloud account and create a "compute instance" (a server on the Google cloud platform) with the server specs you laid out and you will have the setup you are looking for. It wouldn't cost you any more than $50 per month.

Its an interesting idea - all charges are per-use. If I only use it for a few hours a week, it's dirt cheap. Seems like a winner to me

Thanks everyone, now I'll go back and do the legwork! Any additional things I should consider that I failed to list?

Main reason is that it sounds like I have a non-compete period coming up and I am considering #vanlife. In which case, I'll rent my place out and have no place for the server.

why not get a sailboat/ catamaran and make the World your oyster...

I would not know what to do with it and there is a fair chance I'll end up killing myself :) my plan is to tick most of the rock climbing and hiking bucket list instead

Advent of technology, communication equipment and design has made sailing much safer than driving cars/ vans but of-course you can't call AAA in the middle of Indian Ocean. No doubt you'll have tons of fun hiking, climbing and criss-crossing North America.

That's an interesting question - do you think that per unit of travel sailing is safer than driving?

Yes. You have a better chance of running into a log on ICW and sinking your boat than encountering a rouge wave in the middle of an ocean. Because crossing an ocean is a large financial undertaking sailors attempting it are more experienced and boats in better shape.

Right, but per mile traveled, would you say that driving or sailing is more dangerous?
