Someone posted the Hamas charter on DailyKos (of all places) a couple of days ago - pretty interesting reading:
On the dangers of social organizations:
They stood behind the French and the Communist Revolutions and behind most of the revolutions we hear about here and there. They also used the money to establish clandestine organizations which are spreading around the world, in order to destroy societies and carry out Zionist interests. Such organizations are: the Freemasons, Rotary Clubs, Lions Clubs, Bânai Bârith and the like.
On peace conferences:
[Peace] initiatives, the so-called peaceful solutions, and the international conferences to resolve the Palestinian problem, are all contrary to the beliefs of the Islamic Resistance Movement. There is no solution to the Palestinian problem except by Jihad. The initiatives, proposals and International Conferences are but a waste of time, an exercise in futility.
On the role of Muslim women in Hamas:
The Muslim women have a no lesser role than that of men in the war of liberation; they manufacture men and play a great role in guiding and educating the [new] generation.
On educating Muslim women:
The women in the house and the family of Jihad fighters, whether they are mothers or sisters, carry out the most important duty of caring for the home and raising the children upon the moral concepts and values which derive from Islam; and of educating their sons to observe the religious injunctions in preparation for the duty of Jihad awaiting them. Therefore, we must pay attention to the schools and curricula upon which Muslim girls are educated, so as to make them righteous mothers
On social solidarity:
The Nazism of the Jews does not skip women and children, it scares everyone. They make war against peopleâs livelihood, plunder their moneys and threaten their honor.
On religions co-existing:
Under the shadow of Islam it is possible for the members of the three religions: Islam, Christianity and Judaism to coexist in safety and security. Safety and security can only prevail under the shadow of Islam, and recent and ancient history is the best witness to that effect.
On secularism:
Hamas finds itself at a period of time when Islam has waned away from the reality of life. For this reason, the checks and balances have been upset, concepts have become confused, and values have been transformed; evil has prevailed, oppression and obscurity have reigned; cowards have turned tigers, homelands have been usurped, people have been uprooted and are wandering all over the globe. The state of truth has disappeared and was replaced by the state of evil. Nothing has remained in its right place, for when Islam is removed from the scene, everything changes. These are the motives.

Gaza has been under total siege for the past 14 months. No food, medicine, fuel, and electricity is allowed in.
Israel violated the ceasefire brokered by Egypt 195 times during such period.
Violations included, but not limited to, raising complete neighborhoods, such as the case in Bait Hanoun, Rafah and Khan Younis, daily air bombardments against targets in heavily populated areas resulting in the death of scores of civilians, including women and children, on a daily bases, nightly F 16 and F 18 sorties diving at low altitude to create sonic booms that are intended to petrify the inhabitants and shattering glass fronts and windows and of course complete and total siege of this territory.
Due to the siege, the population of Gaza resorted to primitive means to survive. Rich people burned their curtains and furniture to seek warmth during the cold winter while poor ones burned the remaining of their cloth.
Israel made it clear that it will not left the total siege of the 1.5 million Palestinians cramped in Gaza until the "DEMOCRATICALLY ELECTED" government of Hamas is toppled; again in violation of all international laws.

What did they expect when they elected Hamas and fired 10,000 rockets into Israel. Did they really expect flowers? Besides food, medicine, fuel and electricity were allowed in. No one died from starvation in Gaza, the Gazan women chanting "Death to Israel" look pretty healthy if not overweight to me and the number of brand new Audis Mercedeses and 4 wheel drive vehicles in Gaza is quite staggering.

Rocket attacks never stopped, not for a single day, Hamas in violation of ceasefire was building illegal tunnels and smuggling weapons and rockets - also in complete disregard of their ceasefire obligations.
DEMOCRATICALLY ELECTED" government of Hamas
Did not anyone tell them that responsibility for the choices they make is the other side of freedom and democracy. They elect a terrorist organization - they pay the price even if the election was democratic. Let alone the fact that this democratically elected government of Hamas refused to recognize all previous agreements and fired rockets into Israel which was an act of war.
The government of Hamas did not fire a single rocket at Israel. During the cease fire there were several rocket attacks carried by Al Jihad Al Islami and Al Lejan Al Sha'abyeh and Fateh. Those who perpetrated such attacks were captured by the Tanfezyeh forces and imprisoned.
One of the first targets that Israel hit after the ceasefire expired was the compound prison that was housing these fighters.
On the other hand, 3870 sorties and air raids were carried against Gaza during the cease fire.

The government of Hamas was obligated under the terms of ceasefire to prevent all rocket attacks, not just arrest the perpetrators (which they mostly did not do). And they agreed to stop building tunnels and smuggling weapons which they also failed to honor.
In reality there were some violations on both sides but by and large the ceasefire held, when it expired Hamas refused to renew it and escalated rocket attacks, Livni and Egypt tried their best to renew the truce but Hamas kept refusing and kept firing more and more rockets.
