Obamacare Upheld !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Quote from Free Thinker:

almost every person who has any type of insurance does not have the means to pay a worst case senario. that is why the concept of insurance uses cost sharing to mitigate risk.
government only steps in when the private market fails. that there are 50 million plus people in this country without health care is evidence that the private market can not or will not step up and provide a solution.

This is not an accurate statement and it is the only thing about the debate that bothers me. 50MM people ARE NOT without health care in this country. 50MM people are without health insurance. There is a HUGE difference, and it distorts the entire argument.

So let's have the argument of why has the private sector has been unwilling to capture this market.

Quote from PiggyBank:

Then why not reform medicaid? I'm totally serious, wtf is the point of obamacare?

obamacare was was an attempt to get around republican opposition. when kennedy died the dems no longer had the votes. they thought that since the mandate was originally a republican idea it would help move a few republicans. it is not perfect but it was the best they could cobble together. still much better than the nothing republicans were insisting on.

so you would seem to be claiming they get this care for nothing?

its not profitable. neither is fighting wars. neither is the faa, neither is the post office. they are public services the public demands.

Fighting wars is very profitable for certain companies in the private sector, but that's a different argument. There is a reason it's not profitable for insurance companies to insure these people. Guess what it is?

Quote from Free Thinker:

some people get sick through no fault of their own. do they deserve higher rates?
Of course not. But lots of people get sick because of lousy lifestyle choices.
