Obamacare Upheld !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Quote from PiggyBank:

I don't even get what it is yet. We already have medicaid/medicare taxes, so why not just raise those? If you are poor and qualify for medicaid aren't we already paying for your healthcare? I just don't see what the purpose of this mandate/tax even is, to me it appears nothing more than a power grab. what am i missing?

Why don't we have just one tax, called a national sales tax; then we have a mandatory balanced budget?
Then, we can have "free" healthcare for all.
"Free", not just for old people, military people, poor people; for all the people of this country!

Quote from BSAM:

Okay.
Would you buy a General Motors product because the government demands that you do so because "it is for the support of a government"?

The real question is, would we even have a choice at all? That's where we're going.

Indeed, that's where we are, as of today.

Quote from OccupyThis:

"For all of the screaming the Right did over single-payer — and for good, outcome-based reasons — at least the money paid by taxpayers would go directly to government . The Supreme Court has signed off on what is, in very practical terms, a tax levied by the insurance industry on Americans simply for existing. It’s an amazing, and fearsome, decision that really should have both Right and Left horrified."

This is true. It is the equivalent of having to pay auto insurance simply because you're old enough to drive. Whether you own a car or not would be irrelevant.

It's an interesting question. As far as I know (I'm not a customer), in Canada if you don't pay your healthcare premium, you don't get a card and so you don't get care at the hospital, but you don't pay a fine. Any Canucks want to correct me on that, please do.

Right! It's now a tax based on behavior. So now taxes on fat people, people who don't workout, people who drink too much, who don't drink or eat the right foods, will all be applicable to keeping the costs of healthcare low for the common good.

This is absolutely nothing to do with healthcare. Period.

I think when you cease to have a living body you will be absolved of the need to insure it.

The 'free' healthcare aside, I'm with you. The pros of a simple consumption tax outweigh the cons by an obscene margin.
