One of President Obamaâs most ardent liberal supporters has defected from Obamacare.
Rep. Jared Polis, D-Boulder, told a Colorado health policy think tank that Obamacare premiums will be too expensive for some of the wealthiest addresses in America â ski resorts like Breckenridge and Keystone. He says heâs asking the feds to let them sit out the presidentâs national health system.
âWe will be encouraging a waiver,â Polis told Health Policy Solutions in a story that ran today. âIt will be difficult for Summit County residents to become insured. For the vast majority, itâs too high a price to pay.â
The resorts are in Summit County and Aspen is in a neighboring county, which Polis also represents. He has consistently voted in favor of Obamacare.
Polis also wrote to Coloradoâs insurance commissioner asking why an average 40-year-old mountaintop resident would have to fork over $427.80 a month while counterparts in Denver would pay $296.41 for the same plan.
All of this sounded a bit hypocritical to the Colorado Republican Party.
âWhy not seek a waiver or delay for every Coloradoan or every American for that matter?â Colorado GOP Chairman Ryan Call told Watchdog. âLabor unions, big corporations, other politically connected friends of the Obama administration and Summit County are justified in seeking a waiver but what about others?â
Summit County has approximately 1,200 more registered Democrats than Republicans.
Polis Chief of Staff Brian Branton did not respond to emails and phone calls seeking comment.
President Obama has come under fire from Republicans who say Americans will have to endure higher healthcare costs under the Affordable Care Act. While Obama steadfastly maintains that it will be lower costs for all, critics say premiums for the average American not signing up for Obamacare could triple or worse.
So far, Democrats have remained mostly united. Polis has become the partyâs highest-profile defector.
âIf itâs good enough to seek a waiver for a county thatâs a friend of the administration, couldnât everybody?â Call asked.
