The White House’s spokesman said Thursday that the president believes that a golf club in Augusta, Ga., 551 miles from the White House, should change its membership rules and admit women as members.

The golf club in question is the Augusta National Golf Club, which is hosting the high-profile Masters tournament this week.

“It is obviously up to the club to decide, but his personal opinion is that women should be admitted to the club,” Obama’s spokesman, Jay Carney, said in response to a question from a reporter.

The private club does not invite women to be members. Feminist groups are pressuring the club, and its corporate sponsors, to change its long-standing rule.

However, Obama is trying to bolster support with feminist groups, partly because he’s trying to maximize favorable turnout among women in the November election.

Obama “believes Augusta should admit women. We’re kinda long past the time when women should be excluded from anything,” Carney said.

The new announcement reflects Obama’s view that the administration should play a larger role in the nation’s economy and civil society.

President Obama believes it is “long past the time” for women to be admitted to the traditionally all-male Augusta National Golf Club, White House press secretary Jay Carney said Thursday.

The remarks were viewed by some as a conscious effort by the White House to propagate the meme of a “war on women” being waged by Republicans against the fairer sex.

The president himself, however, has a well-documented history of excluding women, especially on the golf course.

Obama played 23 rounds of golf between January and October of 2009 before inviting a single woman to his foursome, the New York Times reported. This was emblematic of broader concerns over the president’s preference for the company and advice of men:

The technical foul over the all-male game has become a nagging concern for a White House that has battled an impression dating to the presidential campaign that Mr. Obama’s closest advisers form a boys’ club and that he is too frequently in the company of only men — not just when playing sports, but also when making big decisions.

“Women are Obama’s base, and they don’t seem to have enough people who look like the base inside of their own inner circle,” former Clinton press secretary Dee Dee Myers told the Times.

In a 2011 article titled “The White House Boys’ Club: President Obama Has a Woman Problem,” TIME magazine’s Amy Sullivan detailed the president’s fondness for male-dominated enviroments.

“There’s a looseness to Obama when he’s hanging out with the boys club that doesn’t appear in co-ed gatherings,” she wrote. “The President blows off steam on the golf course with male colleagues and friends. He takes to the White House basketball court with NBA stars, men’s college players, and male cabinet members and members of Congress.”

Poll: Women boost Obama over Romney in swing states

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Women voters helped President Barack Obama take a large lead over Republican front-runner candidate Mitt Romney in a dozen battleground states, a USA TODAY/Gallup poll said on Monday.

The results point to difficulties the Republicans could face among a critical bloc in November's general election against Obama.

Support for Obama among women under the age of 50 surged from mid-February, the poll found, putting the president ahead of Romney by 51 percent against 42 percent among all voters. Obama led Romney among the women with 54 percent, compared to Romney's 36 percent.

I support their ban on women as a PRIVATE CLUB.
I used to drive by that golf course nearly everyday on my way to school. We got the week off when the Master's tournament was in progress because quite frankly it's a zoo with all the traffic.
Every year that I lived there someone got killed walking into traffic next to the course.
