Quote from reiehaxm:
First, with the top 1% of income earners paying 40% of federal income taxes, almost
twice their share of income, the rich certainly seem to be paying their fair share, and then some.
Liberal politicians who say we need to raise taxes on the rich so they will pay their fair share are
either abusively misleading the public, or hopelessly ignorant regarding federal tax policy. If
40% is not fair for the top 1%, what would be fair, 50%, 100%?

Quote from chuck.ells:
If they receive 99% of the income, then they ought to pay 99% of the taxes.
Quote from Jayford:
They pay far more than they receive as a % in taxes. Many middle class folk pay zero taxes. Do they earn zero income? Until I hit the 30k level after college, I paid something like 5% of my income in taxes. Of course this was in the 80's, but its the same point.
Personally, it wouldn't bother me too much to crank up the taxes on the rich a bit, however unfair, if it would help the economy.
Guess who creates most of the jobs? Corporations? Nope. Small biz? Yep! Most small biz owners employing more than 5 employees fall in the 250k+ category. Take one guess what will happen when you take away more of their profits in taxes? Bye bye any non essential employee. Its exactly what I would do.
Quote from chuck.ells:
Jay,
The top 1% certainly donât pay their fair share of the US military expense. The primary responsibility of the armed forces is to protect americas economic interest, through extortion, force, espionage, or just plain threats.
What?
In your view, does economy equate to corporate profits? Individual (non corporate) standard of living?
Or perhaps it's just the transfer rate of dollars out of my pocket into the pocket of some producer somewhere or other?
âBye bye any non essential employee. â
What the hell sort of business person would ever have, much less pay for a ânon essential employeeâ?

"During a June interview with the Wall Street Journal, Obama stated he will exempt start-up small businesses from capital gains taxes in order to encourage small business development, saying, "Companies that are starting off...should be allowed to accumulate capital, reinvest profits, if there are any, to the point that they stabilize."
A big problem with this is that sole proprietor tax returns are often 1040's. How are you going to distinguish which are the businesses and which are not? I suppose people could just change to S corps, etc., but as it stands now, if he goes after those making over 250k, he is going to nail many contractors, franchise owners, etc that simply file as sole proprietors and pay normal taxes on profits.
Another problem I see with this is that what is he going to say: "we are raising your taxes if you make over 250k...er, unless you have your own biz.'
Whether or not this would be a good economic move may be moot. People making over 250k without their own biz would cry bloody murder.
I believe we should leave taxes right where they are. Stop tweaking the damn things every few years and allow long term planning. After all, we currently have record revenues which keep growing faster than GDP. The current tax system works fine. Unfortunately, spending keeps growing faster than revenues.
How do we solve this problem? Hmmm?
Cut spending maybe? Dramatically maybe? There is so much waste its ridiculous. Both parties are guilty. But you know politicians and cutting. Two concepts that don't often match up well. Eventually they will be FORCED to.

Good points. Cutting spending is how Obama says he plans to pay for all his lofty goals. Hey if he can do it, let him do it right? History has told us its not likely. If he can do what he says then we're in good shape, but we all know how politicians are about their word. anyways good points.
