It's been often stated in this forum that there were no checks and balances for a time with the republican majority and Bush
in the white house. I disagree. They never had a super majority, and they never had the media.

The dems have the media, they may have a super majority, they will have the Whitehouse, and eventually the supreme court. Where are the checks and balances with that arrangement?

John Roberts and Alito -> Bush
John Paul Stevens -> Ford
Scalia and Kennedy -> Reagan
Souter and Thomas -> G. H. W. Bush
Breyer and Ginsburg -> Clinton

Seven out of nine were appointed by Republicans -- but the Republicans whine that they need eight out of nine.

It's unimportant who put the current justices in. What will matter is the one change that will swing the court.

I'm all for a check to Democratic power -- I prefer to see split government.

However, the Republicans utterly, totally and completely abdicated the entire role of congress and turned it into a rubber stamp over the last years, voting in lockstep with Bush. Hell, McCain actually bragged that he voted with Bush 90% the time. The only way to fix that is to vote out every last Republican and only vote them in when they stop regurgitating BS Fox talking points and start voting independently.

On that I think we can agree. On both points above. I am also hoping for mixed government. I think that was the intent of our founders.

I wasn't making a bizarre claim, as the appointments were not relevant to my point, only the total number and the changing of a member, thereby changing the direction of the court as a whole.

The craziest thing is that the American people are two stupid to realize that raising taxes when the economy is in the shit hole will only make things worse.

Any liberals that claim to have the ability of having a logical discussion can't even touch the tax issue with any type of real accuracy. They merely use shallow talking points of claiming that Bush sucks and the economy is Bush's fault.
