I doesn't by volume which is perhaps more important as a motor fuel. It does by weight. but a Kg of LPG takes up more volume than a Kg of gasoline. It is hard to beat gasoline in energy density among the common fuels. Diesel and kerosene do it, but not by much.

Large commercial fleets have been operating safely on natural gas for many years in the United States. Taxi cabs on the west cost were using natural gas in the 1950's. No problems. And engines last longer. Natural gas burns more cleanly than gasoline, however it still produces CO2.
