Time to build a pipeline to fix this problem!

Time to build the pipeline... the only reasonable safe alternative.

Safety concerns grow along paths of oil tanker train traffic

A growing tide of crude oil is being shipped by railroads through Wisconsin, including Milwaukee, at a time when the industry is coming under closer scrutiny because of safety concerns.

Four freight trains carrying crude oil have crashed and burned in the United States and Canada since mid-February.

In one accident on March 5, a Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway Co. train derailed and caught fire near Galena, Ill., after leaving Wisconsin. Twenty-one tankers derailed. Galena is about 10 miles south of the border.

Since 2008, the Mississippi River corridor has emerged as a major pathway for shipping crude oil to refineries from the Bakken fields in North Dakota and Montana.

In Wisconsin, La Crosse has become ground zero for those worried about the shipments.

Mayor Tim Kabat lives about a block from the tracks.

"La Crosse is a railroad town," said Kabat, who was elected in 2013 after a career in urban planning.

"We have Burlington Northern and Canadian Pacific, and I think that people are generally accepting of trains. The change has been the Bakken crude."

While the chance of an accident is small, "it's an issue that keeps me up a lot," Kabat said.

The trains routinely carry 100 tankers at a time — or roughly 3 million gallons of crude oil, according to industry figures. Bakken crude is also highly volatile and, thus, more prone to fires.

I was pleased to read about the growing number of vertical axis wind turbine installations.

and environmentalists claim that vertical axis wind turbines still kill large numbers of birds.

Instead of chop-chop-chop with blades, it's more like slice and dice in a blender.
