In his first big speech of the midterm cycle, former President Barack Obama not only denounced President Donald Trump but went on a tear against the entire GOP.

Obama rather bluntly asked, “What happened to the Republican party?!”

The former president denounced the politics of fear and division and said it’s not limited to one party or the other. However, as he continued, he said, “Over the past few decades, the politics of division, resentment, and paranoia has unfortunately found a home in the Republican Party.”

And he not only pointed to policy examples like health care, but to conspiracy theories (and he included a reference to Merrick Garland):

“[They] embraced wild conspiracy theories like those surrounding Benghazi. Or my birth certificate. Rejected science, rejected facts on things like climate change. Embraced a rising absolutism from a willingness to default on America’s debt by not paying our bills, to a refusal to even meet, much less consider, a qualified nominee for the Supreme Court because he happened to be nominated by a Democratic president. None of this conservative. I don’t mean to pretend I’m channeling Abraham Lincoln now, but that’s not what he had in mind, I think, then he helped form the Republican Party. It’s not conservative. It sure isn’t normal. It’s radical.”

He called them hypocrites for not caring about deficits now that a Republican is president, bringing up the withdrawal from the Paris climate agreement and the GOP “cozying up to Russia” before asking that question: “What happened to the Republican Party?”
