That's the interesting thing. People who are conservative tend to identify with their political beliefs. If anybody else supposedly from that branch decides to do something contrary, conservatives will say "That's not right." For easy examples, look at how hard the base was on Bush I & II, and on McCain.
On the other hand, liberals will say "Well, he's our president so whatever he does must be right." For easy examples, look at how soft the left was on Clinton during Lewinsky (surely getting head from an intern in the Oval Office is a pretty serious violation of feminist principles) or during NAFTA.
But I think Obama will test this. Whether the left stays true to it's Power At All Costs ideals or switches to a more idealized Some Things Are Right And Some Are Wrong construct will be interesting to see. Given what I've seen of the left, I think most of `em will be PAAC.
I just wish the republican leadership wasn't PAAC as well.
