Once you sift through much of the chaff in this thread there are actually some decent comments.
I was emailed by two friends of mine today who are hard-core conservatives. One guy still has the knee-jerk reaction to any consideration of equal-opportunity etc, the other guy was certainly more generous in his comments regarding the speech. Perhaps most interesting was a link forwarded to me by another friend....

Lars Thorwald claims that he was able to look up in the Library of Congress the last speech written by a president or presidential candidate. That would be Nixon's Silent Majority speech on 10/13/69.
