Well, somewhat of a mea-culpa: he blames the error in its rush to judgement on a short staffed Saturday newsroom.

Someone should tell the NY Times that no one cares how they screwed up. What is important is that they are now a crapy new organization with a bias on the news that is unmistakable. They shoud be ashamed.
