Any family not vaccinating their children against deadly communicable diseases in the U.S. is unacceptable. The anti-vaxer parents needs to be jailed for child neglect.

I can understand not vaccinating against diseases which are not deadly (Chicken Pox, HPV etc.) and the vaccines are voluntary for school attendance. However there is no excuse for not vaccinating against deadly diseases such as measles.

As with all issues, there is a middle ground on this. One need not be anti vax and still should be able to protect their child. For example, when my son was born, the hospital immediately wanted to give him a massive cocktail of a bunch of vaccinations, including one for Hep C. I told them to piss off. They immediately told me he wouldn't be allowed in school without the vaccinations. I laughed, as he was a newborn.

Later at his first checkup (3 months) I asked for the list of vaccinations they wanted him to have and did my research on them. He got them individually (though some, like MMR were combos of three or two in some cases) and they were spread out until he was 3 years old, at which point he got all the required vax injections. We had no issues.

Getting massive cocktails of many vaccinations isn't the answer.

Yes, Hep B, sorry. Regardless, there was no reason to vaccinate my newborn son with Hep B.

As for the standard vaccination schedule, I really don't care what the intention was. I wasn't about to give a cocktail of all of them to a newborn. I spread them out.

I had to go to Russia back in 2003 for a long term assignment. When I did, I had to get 7 vaccinations for stuff and I remember getting really sick from all of them. Whether it was because they were all at once or whether I had a reaction to one or more of them, who knows? But more vaccinations means more potential for adverse reactions. A newborn shouldn't be subject to all of them at once. What should matter is whether I gave them to my son before he was going to day care. It cost me more, but what is cost when you look at your child?

There is a standard vaccination schedule for children. My kids followed the standard vaccination schedule 20+ years ago. The young kids today in our neighborhood are on similar schedule. None got a cocktail of many vaccines as a newborn.

The only questions we hear from parents about vaccines is when/if they should get the voluntary ones (e.g. chickenpox, HPV etc.). This comes up in discussions because our daughter is a pediatric nurse.
