nx is only good for 1000 shares or less. So if you want to nx an odd lot the max is 999 shares.

With NYSE Direct+, NYSE member firms have the choice of automatic execution on limit orders of 1,099 shares or less.

Does anyone know how an order for 2000 shares that is designated NX would be handled? Would the first 1000 get the NX execution, and the other 1000 go to the specialists book? or would it be an invalid order and all 2000 shares go to the specialist book?

the executable portion is executed, the balance goes to the book. They're not gonna reject your order! They want to use it.
