just buying a new build. Do i need a nvidia ge force gtx 970 for running 4 monitors ( i might install 2 to run8 ) or will something cheaper do. My monitors will be hd 32 inch.
Any other ideas about components?

I plan an i7...k
16 ram
700w power supply
Windows 7 ( or is 8 better?)
1 tb hard drive ( big enough or should i go for 2)?

I have a GTX 650 card, and running TWS/Sierra Chart on Windows 7 64-bit operating system. So far, so good. If you are not doing anything extraordinary, and your trading software is not few times slower than Sierra Chart, a GTX 760 card should be more than enough. By comparing the specifications of 760 and 970 card, the latter may be an overkill.

According to NVIDIA web site, all three cards can support four monitors. However, it does not hurt to double check with the retailer first. (So far, I have only use the 650 card to support up to three monitors.)

Yes, it's an overkill, unless you're planning on doing some graphic intensive gaming.

I recommend Windows 7.

Your 16 Gig ram will be useless, unless the operating system is 64 bit. The 32 bit would only utilize up to 4 Gig.

Get a SSD for primary drive, and use the 1TB traditional drive for data. I switched to SSDs last year, and will never go back to traditional drives for OS/booting.

This is a good bargain.

My PC has an ASUS motherboard, and an Intel i5 CPU. Hence, I bought an ASUS GTX 650 card, and an Intel SSD. Hopefully, this would minimize hardware/software conflict.

Eighteen months ago, if I could buy this 660 card at $129.99 after $30.00 rebate, I would not purchase the 650 card.

Just my two cents.
 
With consumer grade cards plan to replace fans every 4 years max, unless you plan to refresh your computer farm every couple of years.
Fans everywhere in computer is the weakest point of failure IMHO.

You confirmed you can run 4 monitors simultaneously? Normally these cards have multiple ports but are limited to dual output, you just are able to choose which connectors you use; hdmi, dvi or displayport.
Quad output cards usually are much more expensive and mention quad output capability in the overview and features section.
