nuggets of truth

Would you like us to do an analysis of Gandhi's followers?

I don't think that'll be necessary..

Just have him read "Letter to a Christian Nation" by Sam Harris.

Quote from vhehn:

Kill People Who Don't Listen to Priests

Anyone arrogant enough to reject the verdict of the judge or of the priest who represents the LORD your God must be put to death. Such evil must be purged from Israel. (Deuteronomy 17:12 NLT)

Kill Witches

You should not let a sorceress live. (Exodus 22:17 NAB)

Kill Homosexuals
"If a man lies with a male as with a women, both of them shall be put to death for their abominable deed; they have forfeited their lives." (Leviticus 20:13 NAB)

Kill Fortunetellers

A man or a woman who acts as a medium or fortuneteller shall be put to death by stoning; they have no one but themselves to blame for their death. (Leviticus 20:27 NAB)

Death for Hitting Dad

Whoever strikes his father or mother shall be put to death. (Exodus 21:15 NAB)

Death for Cursing Parents

1) If one curses his father or mother, his lamp will go out at the coming of darkness. (Proverbs 20:20 NAB)

2) All who curse their father or mother must be put to death. They are guilty of a capital offense. (Leviticus 20:9 NLT)

Death for Adultery

If a man commits adultery with another man's wife, both the man and the woman must be put to death. (Leviticus 20:10 NLT)

Death for Fornication

A priest's daughter who loses her honor by committing fornication and thereby dishonors her father also, shall be burned to death. (Leviticus 21:9 NAB)

Death to Followers of Other Religions

Whoever sacrifices to any god, except the Lord alone, shall be doomed. (Exodus 22:19 NAB)

Kill Nonbelievers

They entered into a covenant to seek the Lord, the God of their fathers, with all their heart and soul; and everyone who would not seek the Lord, the God of Israel, was to be put to death, whether small or great, whether man or woman. (2 Chronicles 15:12-13 NAB)

Kill False Prophets

If a man still prophesies, his parents, father and mother, shall say to him, "You shall not live, because you have spoken a lie in the name of the Lord." When he prophesies, his parents, father and mother, shall thrust him through. (Zechariah 13:3 NAB)

Kill the Entire Town if One Person Worships Another God

Suppose you hear in one of the towns the LORD your God is giving you that some worthless rabble among you have led their fellow citizens astray by encouraging them to worship foreign gods. In such cases, you must examine the facts carefully. If you find it is true and can prove that such a detestable act has occurred among you, you must attack that town and completely destroy all its inhabitants, as well as all the livestock. Then you must pile all the plunder in the middle of the street and burn it. Put the entire town to the torch as a burnt offering to the LORD your God. That town must remain a ruin forever; it may never be rebuilt. Keep none of the plunder that has been set apart for destruction. Then the LORD will turn from his fierce anger and be merciful to you. He will have compassion on you and make you a great nation, just as he solemnly promised your ancestors. "The LORD your God will be merciful only if you obey him and keep all the commands I am giving you today, doing what is pleasing to him." (Deuteronomy 13:13-19 NLT)

Kill Women Who Are Not Virgins On Their Wedding Night

But if this charge is true (that she wasn't a virgin on her wedding night), and evidence of the girls virginity is not found, they shall bring the girl to the entrance of her fathers house and there her townsman shall stone her to death, because she committed a crime against Israel by her unchasteness in her father's house. Thus shall you purge the evil from your midst. (Deuteronomy 22:20-21 NAB)

Kill Followers of Other Religions.

1) If your own full brother, or your son or daughter, or your beloved wife, or you intimate friend, entices you secretly to serve other gods, whom you and your fathers have not known, gods of any other nations, near at hand or far away, from one end of the earth to the other: do not yield to him or listen to him, nor look with pity upon him, to spare or shield him, but kill him. Your hand shall be the first raised to slay him; the rest of the people shall join in with you. You shall stone him to death, because he sought to lead you astray from the Lord, your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, that place of slavery. And all Israel, hearing of this, shall fear and never do such evil as this in your midst. (Deuteronomy 13:7-12 NAB)

Looks like that "good book" sucks. :D

The "good book" even tells you about selling your daughter.

When a man sells his daughter as a slave, she will not be freed at the end of six years as the men are. If she does not please the man who bought her, he may allow her to be bought back again. But he is not allowed to sell her to foreigners, since he is the one who broke the contract with her. And if the slave girl's owner arranges for her to marry his son, he may no longer treat her as a slave girl, but he must treat her as his daughter. If he himself marries her and then takes another wife, he may not reduce her food or clothing or fail to sleep with her as his wife. If he fails in any of these three ways, she may leave as a free woman without making any payment. (Exodus 21:7-11 NLT)

It also tells you how the god will help in the rape of women.

Lo, a day shall come for the Lord when the spoils shall be divided in your midst. And I will gather all the nations against Jerusalem for battle: the city shall be taken, houses plundered, women ravished; half of the city shall go into exile, but the rest of the people shall not be removed from the city. (Zechariah 14:1-2 NAB)

Good stuff... eh????

Real nuggets of truth?

Real nuggets of truth?

So are you disputing that God exists with your rants about the Bible, or are you just saying that God is cruel? I am just curious, because you seem to have a lot of resentment toward the teachings of the Bible. All of these passages you choose are from the Old Testament and the sacrificing of people for the sins as stated therein is negated by the final sacrifice of Christ.

The passages are not nuggets of truth as you say playing on the thread's words. They are the penalties set forth by God in the Old Testament. Does that negate all wisdom set forth by the Bible as well. Of course, the swipes you are taking here have nothing to do with a wider understanding of the Bible, but your own hatred towards people of faith.

Personally, I believe that people who harbor this type of anger towards Christianity usually have an inferiority complex that stems from their inability to dissuade the faithful from believing. They try to tear down the believer in order to make themselves feel superior in order to compensate for their underlying feelings of inferiority. Don't mistake what I am saying as applying to all atheists/agnostics though. It is this specific attitude towards religious people that is being displayed here that I am pointing to. The same holds true for many "Christians". I use quotations, because if they were really faithful, they would not behave in this manner. They use the Bible to enforce their superiority over others, while in reality it is used to mask their own feelings of inferiority.

DrMarkan,

I think you missed the sarcasm of my post. The starter of this thread claims that the "good book" has nuggets of truth and he goes on to show how the book chooses the right over the left. I wanted to point out the various "evils" mentioned in the "good book" which are really not nuggets of truth in today's context. By the way, selling one's daughter is not a punishment. It is morally wrong.

I think you are suffering from an inferiority complex, because your beliefs are being challenged and you know you don't have logic to refute it. The only way would be call your opponents name, which you resorted to.

nuggets of truth from the nt "good book":
“As in all the congregations of the saints, women should remain silent in the churches. They are not allowed to speak, but must be in submission, as the Law says. If they want to inquire about something, they should ask their own husbands at home; for it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in the church.”

If anyone is interested in learning the truth about the bible and its history i recommend this book:

I know you were being sarcastic. How does that diminish the malice behind it? The way in which the thread creator was attacked for what looks to be an attempt at facetiousness says it all.

When I noted the inferiority complex, I am observing the reason for one's behavior. It is not name-calling. Name-calling would be something like calling Republicans, "Repugniclans". If you need to see an example of that, go to your first post in this thread.

Back to your post. I am going to assume that you do not believe in a higher being (I could be wrong, but it certainly seems that way). If so, how do you decide whether a father selling his daughter is morally wrong? I'm not saying it isn't, I just want to know how someone that is an atheist decides.

So are you saying an atheist would not know that it is a bad thing to sell his daughter? He certainly would not know its wrong from reading the bible because the bible condones it.
